Default LS6 Cam install.....Do I have to degree?

Stock LS6 cam-Just as the title says, do I have to degree the cam or can I just line up "the dots"?

I'll do what I have to, but am just curious.

I want a smog legal (sniffer) cam for California without the worry of "will it pass". I'm not looking for all out peak power but rather drivability and idle.

If you guys can tell me what the next best cam would be and will do all the things I want it to, let me know- but as for now I just want a stout smog legal SS.

And thanks for the replies

I made 376rwhp and 361rwtq with simple bolt ons and stock 241 heads. I could have opened up the cutout and made more to boot. Hardly a waste of time. I did not degree that cam. You should be fine not degreeing but if you want to verify your ICL then degree it. The LS6 cam is all topend with it's valve events. If you want a broader less peaky powerband with more topend then go for a TR 224 114LSA. With a good tune it will easily pass smog.

Contact one of the sponsors from here and tell them what you need, and they can easily recommend something smog legal for you. There are a few decent cams that will easily make more power than the LS6, and still be able to pass the sniffer test.

I just advances your timing.

You ever seen a cam with an LSA of 112+4?

That means it is advanced 4 degrees.

yeah im thinking of doing a ls6 cam swap in my car also. my car is a 02 z. i know i could get a bigger cam and so on but right now my budget says this is my best bet. will i have to use the pushrods and vavle springs from the donor car? the car this came out of has less then 40k on the clock. anything i should look for. sorry to thread jack but it seems like we are in the same boat. any other help would be great as this is my first pushrod motor.

That is correct.

A 112+4 has 4 degrees of advanced timing already ground into it, that way you just have to install the cam dot to dot and not worry about advancing it.

Most cams are about the same price. If you look around in the for sale section you can probably find a used cam for about 200-250$ and springs for around 40-60$ as well as the hardened pushrods. Either way the LS6 cam is a major improvement over stock.

For as cheap as it can be done, the LS6 cam is a good improvement and hardly a waste of time. Mine picked up over 40 rwhp at 6000 rpm when the stock cam was about done.. I had plenty of people in my town that told me it was a waste of time.. until I outran them..

Times in sig.

PS, I didn't degree mine either, just dot to dot.

I think most of the time people will install dot to dot just for ease and peace of mind.

I bought my LS6 cam from Scoggin Dickey for 229.00 brand new, so I was able to buy their cam swap gasket kit and new GM head bolts all for about 350.00 (i'm doing a head swap too)

If you go with the LS6 heads with stock valves then you can run the stock LS1 pushrods, but Scoggin Dickey tech said if using the LS1 heads/valves you'll need a longer pushrod.

As far as springs I'm not sure if you can use your existing springs with that cam, even from the factory they upgraded the springs.

The pushrods and rockers are the same between the motors as far as I know. The difference is that the LS6 cam has a smaller base circle which was compensated for by making the valves a little taller on the 243 heads. If you can pull assembled 243 heads off an LS6 then it would make your whole project a lot easier.

I would sleep better with hardened pushrods over stock. Even if it is an LS6 cam.
