Default Which is better: Ported LS1 Heads or Buy LS6 Heads

Just wondering should I get stage 1 or 2 with my LS1 heads already on the car or go buy LS6 casting 243 heads. How much gas mileage do u lose porting heads Thanks.

A great deal in my book is the Lingenfelter LS1 CNC ported cylinder head.

Set up with OEM valves and springs they are 1300-"ish" out the door.

I bought them and then upgraded to better valves and springs.

The heads (including upgrades), cam, lifters, and a Walbro 255lph pump ended up right around 3600 bucks from LPE. This includes all new gaskets, a timing chain from Kinetics, and all new TTY OEM fasteners for the heads and balancer.

The upgraded heads have 2.02/1.57 one piece SS swirl polished valves, Comp Cams dual 921 springs, titanium retainers, new PC seals, and locks. Valve job is a three angle done on a Serdi type seat and guide machine and features lapped and back cut intakes and exhaust.

Took about three weeks.

Jeff and Kevin are both great guys who excel at customer service. LPE didn't get its reputation by existing in mediocrity.

i know the LS6 heads will make more power over the ls1 heads. but im still seeing guys running ls1 heads also. in GMHTP, if im not mistaken there was a guy who swapped out some AFR 205 and went with some hand ported ls1 heads!!..even guys that go bigger cubes are running ls1 heads instead of the AFR, TRICKFLOWS, PATRIOTS..what gives?

you shouldn't mod your car at all if you're concerned about gas mileage. I'd get the 243 castings, mill 'em down so you're right about 12:1 CR. LS6 heads can be bought ported from many of the vendors here. Check out TSP, they're a big help!

The 243's will out flow the 241's ported or not, the 205's flow about the same as the 243's. Most of the after-market heads will out flow the GM castings if you have them ported. But best bang for you buck is to use your heads or get a set of 243's and have them ported.

I would be happy to qoute you some prices if you like, we port all of our heads by hand and flow each and every set we port. The cnc ported heads are good but they are the same as everybodys elses heads and the heads you buy do not get flowed in most cases.

I'll show you what your heads flow before we port them and after we get done. For a good street car on a budget you can make very good power with the 241's. If you can find a set of 243's for a good price it's worth the upgrade.

Give me a call if you have any questions.

The 243's will out flow the 241's ported or not,
Not saying that is not entirely true,,,but,,,

Agostino racing compared 241's and 243's, both ported, both with LS6 intakes and the 241's outflowed the 243's up to .450, and even over that, the gains on the 243's were pretty minimal. I cannot back this up as i have yet to port my 241's, and once i do, i will post those numbers. My info is coming from the book, LS1/LS6 Performance. I can say that the 243's are not cheap to begin with, let alone a port job, where as the 241's seem to be everywhere,,,and fairly cheap,,,,so hopefully i can share some intresting info once my heads are done to back this all up

here is the flow numbers shown in the LS1/LS6 Peformance book...

-----241's 243's,,,,both ported, and both using the LS6 intake,,,,
200 166 153
300 211 202
350 229 222
400 244 241
450 257 257
500 269 270
550 277 280
600 283 289

If anyone has any info either backing this claim up, or proving it wrong, please share, as i am researching my freakin eyeballs out on some future projects,,the more inof i can get, the better.

From what my LS1 books have stated:

Stock LS6 > Stock LS1
Ported LS1 > Stock LS6
Ported LS6 > Stock LS1
Ported LS6 > Ported LS1
