Default G5X2 cam is in... problems!!!

First off I would like to congratulate Lou on a WONDERFUL cam... this thing is honestly as drivable as the stock LS6 cam after a few seconds of warming up! I run the A/C ice cold the whole time and never once stalls or even stumbles... and it really drives like a stock cam! revs perfect and smooth throughout the RPM range with no drop offs at all!!
The bad part now... which Im thinking has more to do with the install since I really havent seen any other problems but I want input anyways!

The car eats oil like crazy... the engine is a 2002 LS6 with 15K miles on it... didnt eat a drop or hint any smoke before the cam install, now it fills my garage literally within 20 seconds with smoke. It doesnt go away either, im not positive if its there when im at a light due to my window tint but when im outside of the car and its idling it pours out everywhere! My mechanic said its because of the Rev double valve springs and it isnt his fault... but I dont know any other cam guys in the area with that problem. I have cats and mufflers so I should be running cleaner then them all considering they all have no cats and bullets!! Can anyone suggest what needs to be done to solve this problem?

By the way Lou, thanks for the great cam! I love this thing! Dyno numbers next weekend when I get it dialed in at the dyno!

I thought when the Rev drop in dual springs are installed the valveseals should be replaced than as well? Sounds like a valve seal problem....

I'd have to bet on valve seals. I have an 02 as well and you can't re-use the seals. In fact, you have to buy the 98-01 valve seals because the 02's throw off the height. When putting on the new valve seals, use a 12mm deep well socket to tap the seals in to place. I dipped mine in oil and that combined with the socket did the trick. I know that my #8 cylinder needs to be re-done, but it's hardly noticeable. Lou failed to tell me this for my cam install and there I sat with my thumb in my *** on a Saturday afternoon with a torn down car and no parts.

What ramair said.

Find out IF they replaced the valve seals and which part number they used. I'm betting this is the problem.

I too would bet on the valve stem seals being the culprit. I drove around for about 2,000 miles with no valve seals at all. It smoked like all hell and fouled plugs left and right.

Sounds like valve seals to me. Nothing else could really do what you are describing after a cam install.

Is the car smoking visibly at idle? Very likely could be a seal.

Please tell me you didnt have your car at 1st getting the work done...the last thing I need right now is to have another bad experience with a shop.

Sounds like a pretty simple fix btw, hopefully it all works out.

You should have reveived new seals from LGM with the cam.
GM #12533586 (8) Intake Valve Seal (Black)
GM #12457652 (8) Exhaust Valve Seal (Brown)

They may have installed them on the wrong valves also, you never know...

I got 2 bags from LGM, silver retainers, then silver pieces that went under the valves... was I missing parts? if so definatly gonna be a long week! As of today its getting better, cold starts and warm starts still smoke bad, idle isnt too bad but still smells VERY bad, just not visable thank god! Im going to give it a week or so to see if it stops, if not then the valvetrain will probably be coming back off or I will take it to another shop for a 2nd opinion... or If I was supposed to get valve seals then I guess I need to get them!

In addition... the car is kinda dying up top, which im guessing is part of this problem, it rips hard low and mid range while not really doing much up top. And the rev limiter is hitting early for some reason, or my tach is 500 rpm behind... one of the two

Call the shop asap and find out if they replaced the valve seals or not. Unless you ordered them you probably didn't get them. To my knowledge no one includes them in a "cam kit."

BTW, your tach is probably just behind.

hrmmmmmmmmmm..... if the retainers are bumping into the valve seals, it will mash the seals, leak oil, and then get natier the higher you run it. I would stop having fun with the car until you can determine if the valvetrain is in order.

You need 98 valve seals.
Lou didn't mention this when I bought the cam package.
When I was having the cam installed,Speed inc. called and asked about it,then I called lou.
He gave me the part #,and we we're good to go.
That IS your problem.Put new seals in and you're all good.
You have to get 1998 seals,not 1999-2002.FYI

The valve seals MUST be removed and replaced with new ones after the new hardened spring seats are installed. If they didn't install new seals then they should have their heads examined. This is why they should have been included in the cam kit in the first place. Mine came with the seals, but this was after I asked about them when I placed my order with LGM.

You have to replace the valve seals. I dont know why Lou dont include them with the package but you need to replace them when installing the cam.

Easy enough... Ive heard the dual valve springs are a pain in the *** though, any tips on making my life easier since I have to take them out now? Also, which tool works best? I have a ton of tools but until now all my work has been bolt ons and nitrous kits, I know how to do the valvetrain, just never actually done it. Any help would be appreciated! Also any P/N for the valve seals? Im just gonna grab them around town, Lou has already been too good to me, I dont want to bother him with something like that!
