Default How often do water pumps go??????

I'm woring on a friends 99 ta and he told me that it is leaking antifreeze. I spotted the leak underneath the waterpump while the motor was running. This motor has never been gone into so I doubt the gaskets are bad plus it coming from under the pump not the sides where the gaskets are. The car has under 70k on it . Is that common for waterpumps to go soon?

WP's are a funny animal. Some last forever and some fail prematurly., If its leaking it's bad.

Coolant leaks in general are not common on LS engines. Water pump is most likely culprit and based on your explanation, sounds like it.

Secondly, this is not "soon." The car is 9+ years old. It's low mileage for what it is, but it is getting to be an old car, things will go wrong. My guess is, the coolant is original and never been flushed. You need to flush the coolant about every 2 years and your water pump will last MUCH longer.

Regardless, 9 years is a good life span for a water pump. Change the hoses while you are at it if you plan to keep this car. These cars are not sophisticated but the upside is, if you maintain them well, they will go for a long time.

Good luck!

I had 120k on mine when the leak got bad enough for me to do something about it. I swapped out the gaskets and viola, no more leak! Worth a shot I guess if you're trying to save cash. I mean you'll need the gaskets regardless.

The waterpump on my 95 LT1 went bad at 65k miles, 01 Cavalier at 75k. Even though the original pump on my 98 was still good at 40k I replaced it when I had the motor out.

I just replaced mine for the 01 at 66k miles. I had been smelling antifreeze for quite a while but never saw any leaks. I took the car to the track and noticed coolant splattered on the hood. Got the car up and finally spotted some drops hanging on the pump.

My wp lasted for over 180 k. It just went out about a month ago. IF its not leaking at the gaskets, then its leaking through the weep hole. Good luck

1. the pump is around 8 years old.
2. how often (if ever) did he change the coolant?
3. lot of city miles too i'll bet.

Yep. Gaskets rarely go bad but the weep hole indicates the bearing seal is bad and replacement is imminent.

Mine died at 76K. Yes, it is pretty dang easy to replace. I watched it done as I had never been under the hood with a wrench on one of these before. Cost me $100 for that and the window motor replacement labor. Good to know ppl.
