Default comp cams 224/230 pushrod length?

with this cam do i need to change my pushrods to longer ones? I started my motor up and it sounds like a sewing machine.

Um, yeah, probably. Did you keep stock heads? Head gasket thichness, heads milled or not and what base circle on the cam you have (XE, XER, XFI, LSK all have different base circles) will decide what pushrods you need.
I am putting in an XE 224° 230° (1.474" and 1.492" base circles) with .040" gaskets and .035" milled off the heads. I will be able to reuse the 7.4" Comp pushrods I already have.

It is a XE-R. It is in a bone stock motor, asides from a set of comp #26918 springs. I was thinking maybe theres not enough preload on the lifters with stock pushrod length?
I dont know if that would be the cause for the noise.

Then yes, you HAVE to have longer pushrods.

You want longer pushrods when installing a cam with a smaller base circle like XE-R lobes. A 7.425-7.450" pushrod works best for most aftermarket cams (where a really high lift cam with LSK lobes would need the longest PRs).

So when you guys are using say XE-R on the intake & XE on the exhaust your gonna need 2 different length pushrods?

Idealy, Yes
I'm running a XFI/XE-R (58cc heads, 2cc reliefs) and I'm running 7.425 on intake and 7.400 on exhaust
