515 HP. Trick Flow LS1 top-end engine kits.
I was looking at these new Trick Flow top-end LS1 engine kits in the new Summit catalog. They claim a dyno tested 515 hp on a stock LS1. Does anyone have any real world experience with these kits OR Trick Flow products in general? For the same money is there a better H/C package to go with OR are these kits a excellent bang for the buck?

Trick Flow is definitely a respected name in the performance market, been around for quite a while. Last I heard TEA moved up there to do some work for them, to what degree I couldn't say. Take a look in the dyno section, there's probably some real world info on them in there.

515hp at the crank translates to about 420-440rwhp which is pretty decent depending on the drivetrain and cam choice.
there are alot of guys breaking 450rwhp with moderatly large cams and the TF heads.
if you can afford them, they are one of the top heads on the market these days

You can make that much power with the stock castings. No need to spend that much money on TFS unless you want to. A 228/230 is a pretty mild cam Radical don't start until the late 230's or 240's.

If your going to mix and match you had better do a bunch of research. You just cant throw a bunch of parts together and expect the same results.
What I know of TFS and TEA is that they use a different flow bench which produces big numbers but is not the same as say AFR or someone else. Its like a dynojet compared to a mustang dyno. One gives easy big numbers the other is more indicative of real world power and flow. Also when they advertise, they advertise engine dyno numbers and not chassis dyno numbers and they use thier own dyno or friends dyno. Big difference in the end results.
Best way it to keep asking questions and keep researching. It took me 3 months or research and questions before I made my first cam purchase.
Beware of sales people, it's their job to sell.

From what I understand T.E.A does the cnc porting for trickflow. The most impressive thing about the trickflows and the TEA cnc ported factory heads is the low-mid-high flow #'s they flow great everywhere. Like their Stage 1.5 5.3L heads. at a .550 lift they flow 302 cfm intake 254 cfm exhaust. thats good for their price of $1500 w/new castings. The LS6 heads they sell flow crazy #s.

Do you mean keep the stock heads and just add a cam? Are you saying i can get the same 515 hp. by just adding a cam? What cam is the best for a street car(not too radical)?

We've seen a couple of 346 c.i. cars break the 500 rwhp barrier with the TFS 215 heads....same with AFR 205 heads. Those guys invested a lot of time and money to get there, though. You most likely would not be in the same boat, but they are a proven head. As others have said, the combination of parts is key.
Do a quick search to find posts on the TFS heads and results...there are quite a few of them.

No you wont hit 505 rwhp with that cam. See you need to make sure your talking apples to apples here. TFS could very well mean 505 at the crank and not the wheels. Thats where sales people come in with thier little tricks to decieve. You need to make sure your comparing apples to apples and not an apple to an orange. Been my experience with TEA that this can happen quite easily. All other vendors I've dealt with use RWHP but in my last conversation with Tooley of TEA he waited unitil the very end to tell me engine dyno.
The TFS is a very good head by all accounts.

when he said "stock casting" he ment ported stock casting heads.
you have 3 basic choices....
5.3L heads (853? i think)
5.7L heads (241)
LS6 heads (243)
for well under $2000....and even under $1500 you could get a set of those heads, with a decent port job and mate it to a good cam and make 420-450rwhp (500+ at the crank).
how much exactly will depend on the cam, the heads and you particular car setup.

What I think he was saying is that that cam is a waste on those heads. Not sure why but thats what I get from it.
