Default Disgusting Carbon Buildup Everywhere!!! Take a Look!!

This is the LQ4 Im using for my swap. I haven't heard the engine run yet, so I am kinda getting worried about wtf was going on in there before I got ahold of it. What would be causing all this? Ive personally never seen that much in that many places.

Bad PCV or lots of blowby from a not so cheap fix. Have you pulled the heads off by chance?

can be either/all of 3.
1.pcv

3.no piston rings

on the serious note..seems as if the piston rings been wore out...

Common problem. Have cleaned out plently of intakes like this on trucks. Its just your PCV setup. Take the time and get yourself a nice catch can setup. This will stop the oil from getting into there and making a mess. Do a top engine clean if you want.

Ive had the engine for only a few days. I hope to GOD that the rings aren't done because budget on this project is almost dry, but im almost to the point of putting everything together and being ready to roll.

Using an LS1 intake with the 85mm truck TB.

What about the PCV would be causing this?

If your worried about the health of the rings and valves.. rent a Leak Down tester and see how much leakage and where it is coming from. Someone just recently asked about using a Leak Down tester.. try a search.

I would surely pull the heads to see how carbon is built up in the combustion chambers. As bad as that is the compression ratio could change and you could develop hot spots that may cause detonation. Do you have any idea how many miles are on the engine? Blowby also would be a concern.

That doesn't look all that bad to me. If you're pulling the heads, take a good look at the chambers before you get to worried. What you're showing looks pretty normal for a motor thats got a few miles on it. Especially for an LS motor thats got a less than perfect PCV design.

Thats nothing compared to some cars that I have seen and worked on. I did a Cadillac today and when i have the intake off I wiped the inside of the throttle opening and it basically looked like I was wiping up oil. Just get everything cleaned up very nicely and get a catch can setup to stop it from happening again. Id bet my motor and say there's nothing wrong with the rings.

Don't worry, that is connon my probably 50% or more engines I see. Just throw a new PCL valve in it.

You can't use a 85mm TB with the LS1 manifold. The opening in the manifold is only 75mm. The lip will cause a restriction and a hell of a lot of turbulance.

Why exactly could I not take a dremel or something similar to the protruding area of the intake.. It bolts right up so I dont really see where that could be a problem.

Maybe Im wrong though, havent really put much thought into that area.

If you have EGR and combine that with PCV soup and oil ring blowby what do you expect. The intake and throttlebody get coated with soot from the EGR mixed with oily mist from the PCV. Imagine the finger painting you could do with a sloppy mess like that. Now add in some blowby and it's no wonder it looks lilke someone left the oven on too long. At least you can get rid of two out of three pretty easily, but blowby is going to take a little work. One of the first things you should do on an engine is bypass the EGR(if it has one) system and install some sort of catch can. Blowby is a normal wear and tear issue on a high mileage engine unless you're running Top Fuel and then you can't get around it.
