opinion on doing heads cam on stock ls1 without lt's
im trying to keep this car smog legal , since im ca that means no longtubes.
im not looking to spend a fortune on like afr's or anything. just looking for good heads with a nice cam since this is my DD. i need it to be reliable . any ideas on a cam choice with heads is appreciated.i may do some shortyes but i dont know if there will be any gains worth it. i have heard some do the truck 6.0 mani's to get some gain.
i dont know if this rule applies as to cars as im more familiar with lsx trucks. but 224/224 is pretty much the limit on size for something to pass smog.
just looking for something in the 4xx rwhp and 11's at the track if possible.

hmm , but remmeber it will be with stock or 6.0 mani's.
since my exhaust wont breath great with the mani, would heads even get much enough gain to be worth it with the cam?
right now the cheatr sounds pretty good but im open to suggestions.

If you have to keep stock manifolds I'm gonna recommend the cheater also. Some ported LS6 heads and the cheater cam will perform nicely w/ manifolds. The gains from the heads may not be as high w/o longtubes, but you will notice the improved performance enough to warrant purchasing them.

We've done 224 cams with PRC heads & stock manifolds. It definately limits power output, but give a good power jump with nearly no changes to driveability at all!! We have a cnc ported 241 head setup for $850 with double springs. You could install those & a camshaft for about $1350 with pushrods & gain a good 60hp atleast....

It is not as much Static CR but DynamicCR that you need to watch for regarding Octane use.
There are many cams you could use. Basicaly any cam in the 210>228 intake duration with a good -6* overlap or better.
The smaller the duration the more overlap you can venture, the higher duration like a 228, I would seek less overlap to compensate.
To name a few offshelf from various vendors:
224/224 .581/.581 114 Comp Cam
224/224 .563/.563 114 TR
220/220 .581/.581 115 MTI (Stealth 1)
224/220 .581/.581 116 MTI (Stealth 2)
215/231 .60x/.57x 117 TR (CheaTR)
210/218 .5xx/.5xx 113+ (Crane/Vinci)
etc... etc..
