mine was blowing white smoke under full throttle and It would puff black smoke on startup. Then it pooped out and made a shitload of nasty noise and my oil pressure was fluttering up and down. I broke the ringland on #7 and either a cause of the ringland or caused by the ringland the rod bearing spun on #7 as well.

92k miles isn't really that many miles for a '98.
Compression test/leak down test should tell you pretty much all you need.

I do mine in my garage, but most competent auto shops should do them also.

dude, double check your oil pump/pickup tube/o ring/pcv system. LS1s will run over 200K even if you beat the **** out of them!

Pull your spark plugs and tell us what they look like.

Not all LS1's run forever, oil analysis (this isnt a magazine), and ya if you dont want to pull your plugs you need to take it to a shop. Take it to one or someone you can really trust. Half those shops love it when people walk in and think they need a new motor, thats big money for their pockets.

Pull your plugs tell us what they look like. If one is black and wet there's your prob.I'd try 7 first.

Sounds like the motor got some issues, you could do a leakdown test to confirm but sounds like the motor got hurt at some point.

I would change the oil pump (LS1's had a problem of oil pumps that just quit) and maybe look into the LS6 PCV conversion. Have you frequently been spinning up past 5000 rpm's?
check LS1howto.com for the PCV conversion, might... might be your problem.

Oil on the plugs and smoking out the cap is a good sign of blow by. Worn rings. 20 psi oil pressure also? Possible you have a problem with the sending unit, or possibly the gauge itself, but I doubt it in this situation. If you wanna check the pressure accuracy for sure, get a manual gauge and hook it up to where the oil sender goes.

How often do you check your oil?

My guess:

You developed a blowby problem due to washed rings which caused your car to start using oil. More then it did normally if you had a consumption problem to begin with. You forgot to check the oil, it got low and you spun some bearings which is whats causing your low oil pressure at idle.

Dont quote me on that, cause anything is possible. anyway, if this does happen to be the case, start looking into a rebuild.

If you're convinced this isnt the case, do a leakdown test to eliminate the rings being part of the problem and hook up a mechanical gauge to verify the oil pressure and go from there. Also, you can check to see if your car is smoking on acceleration or on deceleration. Smoking on accel indicates worn rings, smoke on decel can indicate you're getting oil seeping through your intake rocker bolts into the combustion chamber.

Good luck.
