Default Loud valvetrain

Is it normal to have a very loud valvetrain with a Duration 232/236, Lift 595/601 camshaft?

I have a LS1 with this cam and it is unbelivably loud, and several people that I have spoken to, said that this is normal due to the cam specs. But I have never heard one this loud.

It is so loud that if it is normal, I am going to change it to something else.

I have spintech mufflers and you can't hear the exhaust until you get up in the RPM's

Thanks
Tom

It is definately normal but you can quit them a bit by installing the right length pushrods. Get a pushrod length checker ($20) and you can have it done in 30-45 mins. It helps but you will always have some.

Cheers!

I'm no expert, but it sounds like your pushrods may be too short and the lack of preload is causing the noise. It may also be not opening your valves all the way???

ssheets has a good point.....i also had a buddy with a cam very similar to yours that had klackidy valvetrain noise....espically when cold.....some of it is nature of the engine then again if the valvetrain isnt correct for that cam.....it will deff make some noise

The valvetrain is stock with the exception of different length pushrods for the cam.

So, changing the rocker arms, and other valvetain components won't address this issue?

Are you using the factory springs? If so you need to change them asap!

I would recommend either a set of PSI beehive springs with titanium retainers or a dual spring setup from patriot also with titanium retainers. I would not recommend comp 918's since so many people are having problems with them. The titanium retainers will help control valve float because they weigh less.

You really don't want to even run that cam with stock spings. If you get on it at all it will likely float the valves and destroy your motor.

Also, if that is a comp grind you probably need 7.425" pushrods. You can check the length with a pushrod length checker but it's hard to do without having a dummy (solid) lifter in place.

Is there a way to tell before pulling it apart?, if there is damage?

Also, it hasn't been driven but a couple hundred miles since built, and about 4 passes at the strip.

So what length did you put in? Like DaveX said, you'll probably need 7.425" pushrods if you don't already have them.

Oh damn! I would have to say that your noise is from broken springs. DO NOT start it at all till you get the valve covers off to look. if they are broken they can fall in hit the pistons.

Yea...I would be amazed if you didnt have broken springs all over. Pull those valvecovers and have a look. Are you sure they are stock springs? How did you ever get the know how to do the swap without knowing about the springs?

I had someone do the work for me and apparently, I've been had.

I will pull it apart and check it out.

I will post on the outcome when I can get it apart.

Thanks for all your help.

Hopefully there's no damage and you just have a noisy sloppy valve train with too short of pushrods. The springs likely won't break they just won't keep the valves from floating which can be catastropic if youur valves hit your pistons...it's the 4 passes on the strip that scare me, but until you know, keep your fingers crossed.

So the guy just put in a cam and didn't even consider the valve train???

No, I paid him to port the heads and add the cam, and he said that everything that was needed was included.

When I picked up the truck, I thought it was loud, but he said that was normal for that size cam to have a loud valvetrain.

When I went to the strip with the truck, I was noticing some camaros and such with heavy cams that were nowhere near as loud as mine, which in turn sent me on this search.

So here I am, apparently stuck in the ***.

We will see very soon what the outcome is.

If he ported the heads he had the valves out and he likely performed a new valve job. If he has this much knowledge he would know about valvetrain relationships in general...are you sure the springs are stock? I find that hard to believe. I can see a miss on the pushrod length, but to have porting knowledge, even a basic knowledge he would surely have replaced the springs with something that supports the cam specs.

Have you asked him about the springs?
