Default VIDEO Cam only A4 full bolt ons 421.74HP 394.29TQ...got a lifter ticking problem

XFI \ X-ER
230 \ 230 .612/.591 111+4 but installed 2* retarded to gain a little more PTV clearance...

The problem is it sometimes ticks pretty good sounds like a lifter tick...the weird thing is that it comes and goes...if i were to go out and start it, it will be fine but then after 3 minutes of driving it starts ticking bad...either i got a bad lifter or the pushrods are not long enough...has anyone experienced this with XFI lobes...i have 7.4in pushrods in it now...thanks

I've got 7.425 rods with my 226/232 XFI grind. Other than the typical sound of a sewing machine it's all gravy.

Default had a problem similar

if the oring on the down tube of the oil pump is pinched or torn at all that could cause it. had the ticking problem from that after my cam swap. https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...458&highlight=

What sort of ticking is it? Does it come from all over the valvetrain, or is it isolated to one side or another? If it's from all over, could be your o-ring as mentioned, but if it's isolated it could simply be a leak in your Y pipe.

If it's throughout the drivetrain give us some more info, like what pressure you're reading, what oil pump you're running, et cetera.

If you're still running stock thickness head gaskets and unmilled heads, the ideal pushrod length falls between 7.425" and 7.450" with XFI lobes. Most opt for the 7.425" pushrods. 7.400" PRs are a little on the short side.

Those are some really impressive numbers.

I will be running a cam that is very close to that.

230/232 XFI/XE-R .612/.595 111+2

Hopefully mine will put out close to what you did. Congrats

Do you have a video of it. I would like to hear what it sounds like.

The ticking comes and goes sees not to happen when i first start it up or leave it sitting for a while but after like 3 or so minutes of driving it starts ticking like the video that whitesnake posted up...almost to the tee...

whitesmoke did yours always sound like that or did it come and go like mine is doing because mine sounds really close to what yours did...

how did you guys install the o ring i put it on the pickup tube and placed it into the oil pump and had to tighten up the screw to draw it up because i have a double roller timing chain that is shimmed out 3mm for clearance so the pickup tube doesnt line up correctly but when i tighten the screw it was flush so i thought it was okay...maybe i messed the o ring up...

I'm also going with the o-ring after watching those vids. I put a new one on when I bolted up the new oil pump. Just slid it down the tube, and then bolted it up to the pump before bolting the pump onto the block.

going to have a video up soon sounds almost exactly the same...took about 5 minutes of driving for it to start making the noise...it will not make it right on start up and i watched the oil pressure and it stayed the same with the noise and without...seems like when the oil warms up and gets thinner it starts to sing it song...

Nice numbers, look at how flat that trq curve is. I hope you like the power, how does it drive?

As for ticking, if lifter related the pushrods are a bit short, 7.425 or 7.450 will quiet them.
Otherwise could be the pump oil ring or exhast leak.
