pulled the motor outta the bird today and finally found out what the knock was in the motor the timing chain was about to fall off it had so much play in it you could move the chain back and forth 1/2-3/4 of an inch so im looking for a good replacement chain and while ive got the motor out and its so easy to replace the oil pump now im gonna do it so what oil pump and timing chain set should i go with.

I went with a LS2 timing chain and a high flow ls6 ported oil pump. The chain is not double roler but it has thinker links than the LS1 chain and uses your stock cam/timing gears.

I just installed a Melling oil pump with a JP performance billet chain. Both seem like quality products, haven't started the car cause I'm still doing my head and cam swap.......and blower.

LS2 and ported pump is the combo I usually recommend. Simple, cheap, and works great. The LS2 chain is a lot beefier than a stock LS1 chain.

I've got no complaints with my ported LS6 pump that I bought off a member here. I also went with the LS2 chain because it's just simple and cheap, and as other stated, a lot beefier than the stocker.

Curious, what chain were you running?

Also, how does your cam plate look under the sprocket, they are know for a lot of wear so I went with a new timing set that has a Torrington bearing.

A ported LS6 pump is a nice piece but I like the 10296 hi flow Melling better.

Won't be long 'till I do my cam swap and I was thinking of upgrading the chain while I'm in there. Will the LS2 chain fit on there with no other modifications?

Never seen strength numbers between the JWIS and the LS2. LS2 is thicker, but JWIS may be stronger steel. Both have seamed rollers.

The JWIS is proven chain but I don't hear about people breaking the LS2 chain ether. I may just go with the LS2 chain on my next motor.

Hey there dude. I've just done the pump/chain swap too and what a friggin nightmare havin to set up the clearances between the pump body and the drive gear! I also have to modify the cover, can you help us out with where to grind etc? How did you centralise the cover to make sure the seal was dead concentric? Cheers, Mark.

Spacer should come with the kit to space the oilpump. I didnt have any problems with the pump not clearing the gears. For the cover just put it on with like 5 bolts and turn the engine over by hand, then take the cover back off and you should be able to see where its hitting. Little marks will form on the inside of the cover and just grind down those areas I had to grind down like 4 areas esp the little half sphere .
