Default Ls2 timing set vs double adjustable set?

what benifits would come of getting a double roller adjustable timing set as apposed to the ls2 set, or would it just be a wast of money for either and stick with the ls2 timing chain only( not the set)? BTW this is for a cam only install

Personally, I'm not a fan of double roller chain sets, I prefer a nice single set. As far as adjustability, that would depend on what you wanted to do. If the cam is ground correctly AND you don't want to vary the cam timing than an adjustable set is NOT required.

The LS2 chain is a very cost effective option for a good chain if you choose to go that direction.

I just replaced the chain with the LS2 version, it doesn't cost much and it's much stronger looking than the original.

If you decide to go double roller do some homework and search on it. Sometimes you have to grind down your front cover to get the thicker double roller sprockets to fit.

I like a good single chain as well. I have read of too many guys having problems fitting in the double. I think the way to go is a good single setup, the GMPP timing chain damper, and hopefully a Torrington bearing on the cam gear. A few guys have broke double chains, and I tend to think when they install they don't verify the sprocket alignment with a straight edge.

I like the Cloye's Hex-Adjust. Strength, adjustablity, and still a single row. I think you can get a double also.

i would recommend an adjustable if you are getting a custom cam because you might wanna get a little more clearance by either advancing it or retarding it...but if it is an off the shelf gauranteed fit go with the ls2 timing set, dont just replace the chain...

If you need PTV clearance, flycut.

What's the benefit of replacing the stock timing gears with the LS2 gears, assuming the stock gears are in acceptable mechanical condition? The LS2 gears are made of the same material as the LS1/6, they are manufactured different to accommodate the sensor changes in the LS2.

Thank you all for your advice guys. If its not gonna make a difference , and make my cam install more complicated, then i think i will just do the ls2 chain only.

Just chain only will eliminate any issues with sprocket alignment as well with a new setup.

Yeah because flycutting is just so much fun and easy to do over advancing retarding the timing...

also i know lots of people just change the chain but wouldnt u just want piece of mind to have sprockets that were actually made for an ls2 chain...even if it looks ok i bet it isnt a 100 percent perfect fit...those sprockets are made for ls1 chains...to each his own...

Further information on the JWIS timing chain. I sent an e-mail to IWIS Ketten about the JWIS chain (sold by Katech as the C5R chain). Here is a quote from the response I received:

"The roller chain G68V-2 is one of our best 3/8" roller chains and has typical iwis features for example the seam in the rollers. For your information the G68V-2 is the series chain for the BMW M V10-Engine and its appropriate for high numbers of revolutions.

Nice work, looks like the Katech chain is a winner!

I too am in want of a replacement timing set, mine is for a 2004 LQ4. My Chevy dealer will sell me the LS2 for $100, but I was looking at SDPC they have a RollMaster Double Roller with Torrington bearind and oil pump spacer for $114.That sounds like a steal? Has anyone used this T-set in a LQ4 any issues?
