Default Final cam decision - Poll

Well, I have decided to throw a cam in and want some opinions. It is an 01' Z28 with 100,000 miles. Mods are Edlebrock Full length headers and y-pipe, and a free flowing cat back. Stock trans with a Yank 4000 stall converter (SS Series). Stock rear end with 3.42:1 gears. So far the best time with the car is 12.3 @ 108 MPH.

Cam choices are:

MT1 X1
TR224 - 114
TR230/224 - 111
TR227/224 - 114

Car gets cruised mainly around town but sometimes gets driven on long road trips 500+ miles. Sees the track maybe 3-4 times a year. Want some lope, but want it to be completely driveable and not have to worry about it dying out. Will most likely be bringing it to Speed Inc. to get tuned after installation.

What are your guys thoughts?

Also, based on what the car runs now, what do you think the new times will be after cam change? I want to be comfortably into the 11's. Is this possible with just the cam change to one of these relativley "smaller" camshafts?

those are good cam choices. alot of people are very happy with the MTI X1 and the TR230. i myself have been really considering the X1. both of those cams are bad *** street cams for sure. search for a guy named gillbot. with a 4k stall, and midlength headers and the TR230/224 he put down like 399rwhp on stock heads!!

Thanks guys, this is a very interesting result. It's not really a one sided decision. I am really curious to find out where this ends up. Anybody have any ideas (1/4 mile performance wise) where the car will be at?

Once again, thanks for your guys input.

ive seen x1 cam only cars in the 11.70-11.90 range....plus it will have great power in the midrange where your car will see 95% of its use!

Of the cams you listed, I like the TR230/224 the best. It makes the best power under the curve of the cams you listed. I'm also a fan of the X1. Excellent cam.

Thanks everybody for all your help. This Poll didn't really give me a definite answer, but after plenty of research I'm going to go with the TR230/224. I have not read one post (Out of alot) where anybody had a problem with this cam.

Instead of making another post, with this cam, can you guys help me with other things that go along with the installation?

What length push rods?
What Springs can I go with?

Car has 100K

Should I replace the oil pump even if it does have great oil pressure now?
Should I pull the heads and replace the lifters even though there is no sign of concern?

any spring good to .600 lift will work and just a set of hardend pushrods.. may be wise to replace the lifters as well. imo

Would 7.425 pushrods be a good choice? For ybaslo1? 918 springs? Maybe...hopefully someone else will chime in. This what I'll go with until told otherwise.

I plan on swapping my pump with the ported ls6. I have 100k as well and also showing good oil pressure. When are you going to do this cam swap, I'm looking for the exact same things you are and I'm curious on your results.

Who sells this cam?

99-TR230/224-111 Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft
"Reverse Split" - 230/224 .575/.563 111 LSA 2200-6800 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Automatic cars require computer tuning and it is recommend for optimum results on manual transmission cars . Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

I'd go with duels just for a little more insurance if something went wrong

So, 1.8 rockers are stock I'm guessing?

No, 1.7 is stock. They are saying you can use the stock ones or you can use an aftermarket that is the same ratio as stock.
