There's a great writeup it the first sticky here about flycutting. If you are going to have the heads off anyway, flycutting will allow you run a thinner gasket, mill the heads, etc.

It's not too hard to do and well worth it, in my opinion.

Yes, you can flycut in the car. My recommendation is to get yourself an angle drill and use that as you will bot be able to get a normal drill on 4 and 6. You may also have to cut the guide rod down. I had to trim 4 inches off to get the drill to slip onto the guide rod and have enough clearance (for the drill) to make the cuts.

I highly recommend the cutters from Lindy Tool. Take a look at the post 405HP Z06 has linked for ya. I used the same and my comments about are based upon using those cutters.

If you end up having to notch your pisons its actually quite easy. The most tedious part (IMHO) is removing the head more times than I care to count. Just go slow until you get the hang of it, and inject a little attention to detail and you will be fine.

I made my cuts without the head gasket in place and only snugged up the bolts around each cylinder I was cutting. I started with the pistons a few degrees down in the hole and brought her up (slowly) to TDC while I was spinning the cutter. A little oil on the cutter face, backside of the tool, and piston top goes a long way. If you have grooves in your cuts, clean the shavings off (this is paramount as a whole), a little more oil, and finish your cut. The cuts will come out smooth when finished, just like in the pics.

Good luck.

Remember though if you plan to run nos it causes hot spots on the piston and increases the chance of detonation. If your not it is all good.

If one sands down the sharp top and side edge from the valve relief, it shouldn't cause a hot spot. This operations should be considered normal when flycutting.

The flycutting procedure should not cause you any issues.

when you fly cut the pistons does it decrease your compression?

Yes, it will decrease your compression. If you keep them smallish, like .075, youll probably only add about 1 cc to the chamber volume. Most people recomment a maximum of .090 to .100 on stock pistons, although many people have gone further than that without issues. A hundred shot shouldn't be too much for a moderate flycut in a stock piston.
