Default High rpm damage

So I made a post earlier about a ticking problem. Needless to say I found the problem...

Just got another push rod to put in there thanks to Lawhorn (thanks a lot man)... Hopefully I didnt mess anything else up.

So whats the procedure... should I soak the push rods before I put em in. Would it mess anything up if I put em in dry.

Thanks!

I've always soaked mine in oil first but it shouldn't really matter too much. I do suggest aftermarket chromoly pushrods though. Much safer at higher RPM's. I've got mine spinning at 7000 RPM pretty often and haven't had any problems. Of course I've got the supporting mods to allow it.

so I take it you missed a gear?

pushrods aren't meant to be fusible links in the valvetrain. If you bent it that bad AND manage to scuff off that much material off the head, I'd consider there's more to the damage than a bent pushrod.

what other damage are you talking about slade? Are you saying that the chunk of metal could be going around in the engine beating **** up, or maybe I damaged a lifter? I guess I wont know until tomorrow. Should I change the oil immediately or what? I checked my dipstick, and there are no metal shavings or anything on it. I drove around with the car like this for a couple of days so I am sure that whatever is left of that metal has already taken its tole. It ran surprisingly well for that push rod to be that messed up. If I would have known the damage was THAT bad I wouldnt have driven it at all.

More opinions please!

Well you gotta think of HOW that pushrod bent like that. It's possible that you floated the valve train and you may have more than 1 bent pushrod. Roll them on a flat surface like a glass table to check.

Now if you did float the valve train, it's possible that you may have damaged a valve and had some piston to valve impact. Lifters can be damaged in the process as well.

-large amount of metal missing
-possible damage to lifter
-possible damage to valve
-possible damage to piston

Well thanks for the input slade! Although it is scaring me. Do you think there is a chance it will run absolutely fine with a new push rod? The car ran smooth with a tick. There was a small miss, but other than that it ran exceptionally well for a push rod to be that screwed.

I have my fingers crossed...
Is the drain plug magnetic?

I'm curious what your ticking noise sounded like. What did you hear/feel that told you to immediately check the pushrods or suspect a major problem?

How loud was the ticking?

I did this to my car a while back. I had two strippers in the front seat getting it on and urging me to hurry up and get to my house. I was pretty distracted and at third gear redline meant to shift it into fourth and instead went into second. I didn't even care at the time as I just kept going.
I ended up having six bent intake pushrods. Also on the one that rubbed the push rod hole the worst it cracked the lifter tray and caused the lifter to spin around on the cam and ruined my cam. The only way to know if you have any more damage is to pull the heads. Good luck. Don't miss anymore shifts.

At a minimum I would replace the pushrod and check/collect the metal shavings from the tip of the drainplug, and no more high rpm driving until you have the proper modifications to support it.

The drain plug is magnetic, but that's a lot of material to hold onto that small magnet. Drain the oil and hope most of it comes out from that.

You better hope that the pushrod simply gave under high rpm stress and that the valves didn't float during that time and caused your valves to smack those pistons. Stock valvetrain isn't supposed to kiss 7krpm.

Thanks for that video.

I have had a ticking noise since I bought my car. You can't hear it at all outside the car. If you're in the car though, you can hear it. It's a light ticking noise that follows the RPM range...just like yours. It's nowhere near as loud though. You can hear it when cruising at highway speed as well.

The thing is, it's done this since I purchased the car. I have it about 16months now and it's always done it. I had it dyno'd last year and it put down exactly what a stock LS1 should put down (312rwhp). So the power is definitely there.

I have made posts and even a thread now and again dedicated to this noise, but the responses are always mixed. They range from "Your engine is on the verge of catastrophic failure" to "Thats normal LS1 behavior and it's nothing at all to worry about". So...I've dealt with it from the beginning and have enjoyed the car. But seeing threads like this...well, naturally I begin to get worried again.

I suppose I should tear off the valve covers and pull out the pushrods? I have never done anything like that or dove into the internals at all. I'm not afraid to learn, I just want to make sure it's even necessary.
