Second Guessing my LSx 454 Cam [Specs Inside]
Well, it only took a month for the damn thing to show up, but my new cam just arrived.
Now i'm wondering if I made the right choice.
Car: 2000 C5 M6 Corvette "Street Car" (some strip)
Motor:
454LSx (11.8:1)
TFS 245 Heads
LME Sheetmetal Intake (Also have a ported FAST)
NX Direct port (But i'm not sure if i'm even gonna install it anymore
Kooks 2" Headers
Old Cam:
Cam Motion grind 253/259 @.050 .643/.613 114+4
I hated it..The power came on sluggish and it fell on its face at 6300rpm's (FAST and Sheetmetal) Overall, I just wasnt happy.
New Cam:
Comp Cam Grind
252/262 @.050 .612/.612 113+3
My last powerband felt kind of flat until around 3500 then hit hard. I am used to REALLY hard torque down low.
I am looking for a car with HUGE midrange power, but carrys to 600rw at around 6500. I want a clean idle since its a street car.
I dont care to hear about all of the FAST/Sheetmetal bullshit. I've got both, and have tried both. I dont care what I use, I just dont want to have people pull cam numbers out of their *** for me to try..
Will my can give me what I'm looking ofr, or am I wayyyy off??
I'll make you a deal, the person who gets the cam SPOT on (If mine isnt the way to go) will get a $100.00 Visa gift card for their troubles..
But i'm not gonna try out 316 cams to get it right..

Interesting choice from the master lobe catalog. Who spec'd that out for you?? your new grind kinda looks like mine... except mine has a little more duration and lift.... and I have l92 heads and l76

Subscribing to this thread... Our cam was chosen for power and valve events, but I am always curious about results. Since we'll have essentially the same motor LSX 454, TFS 245 heads, ARH 2" headers, only real difference is with our ported FAST 90/90; I am curious what the recommendations are!
BTW we have a 257/266 .649/.630 112LSA going in and Bryan says it will be "rowdy"... Although I also can read you want something a little more tame on the idle... I am still curious!

looking at the specs i don't see much of a difference. the first cam isn't all that big in a 454 cube mill,especially in a vette. the intake lobe is only 1* different and going from a 114+4 to 113+3 may not make alot of difference. hit up patg or someone that knows more than alot on here and here their opinions. have you got a dyno graph handy ? i would like to see what that setup looks like.
*edit* why are you going to an exhaust lobe with 10* more also with 2" headers and i'm sure a decent exhaust how about something like a 252/256 or so ?

Need more info but 252/254 115+3 LSA is what I would think of (ballpark)
I like your first cam better than second but perhaps retarded another 2*
You say the car is sluggish, what gears are you running? Do you have any graph? Perhaps your issue is not cam but overall combo related.
With such a custom setup you should list all your specs from motor to dif (including fuel)

You do seem to want it all, but most of that is doable. The 600 rw is probably doable with the idle-low-mid range you want, but if you are more concerned with how the car runs than just a peak dyno number, you need to get hooked up with an engine designer, not an RE cam chooser. (RE = Rectal Extraction). I know of a few good ones, but none sponsor here, and maybe don't even read this board. I won't violate forum rules with names.
IMO, you need to discuss your needs and wants for vehicle performance with the engine designer. If the right one does a cam/valvetrain for you, you won't need to pay the $100 bonus. He will make his normal money selling you the cam/parts at reasonable prices. You also will not see the specs posted on a forum. I believe combinations close to yours have been successfully cammed to make big power, but not all of them were designed with the idle-low-mid requirements.
I had to laugh at the "316 cams to get it right". Your choice of a number could be WAY off. Remember the story about the infinite number of monkeys pounding on an infinite number of typewriters and coming up with a masterpiece? It only take one intelligent "cam monkey" to get you the right cam.
Finding the "right" cam is like finding the Holy Grail. Nah, the cam is a lot easier. You just need to know where to look.

Jon has great advise on selecting an engine builder to come up with the perfect combo. Just looking at the parts in your build, the two cams you have don't look terribly off in the way of spec. The two things that are killing your street manners are your sheet metal intake manifold and your tune.
Before you do another cam swap, I would highly recommend you have Tony Mamo velocity port your FAST intake and replace your sheet metal intake with it. It sounds like you crave low and mid-range torque and the sheet metal intake you're running probably doesn't have the runner length or cross-sectional area to promote robust low rpm torque. The FAST 90 will.
Put on the ported FAST, then get it tuned by somebody REALLY good. I'm very confident you will fall in love with the current cam you have.

I was told the the TFS heads on a larger motor like a slightly wider LSA . especially for that low end. My cam is on a 115 and it's got pretty good power down low

You may want to contact edcmat-l1 about your combo. This car has more than pleanty TQ at all times while driving it on the street, I can't imagine the traction problems your going to have on the street.

The 454 is a slightly different animal compared to the 402/408 family. My 408 currently runs a pretty flat tq curve, and plenty of it; however, this combo has the potenial to have unbelievable tq down low.
