Default I bought a used cam

I just bought a used TR224/224 114LSA cam about 2 weeks ago. I noticed that there's a little bit of red paint on the cam (not the lobes) and I was wondering if its supposed to be there. I talked to the guy and he said it was there when he bought it brand new. What do you guys think? Also I'll be buying some 918 springs, but do you think I should use Ti retainers? I should get stock length hardened push rods right?

Yes the paint is supposed to be on the cam I honestly dont know its purpose specifically but that comes on all cams new i believe, most spring packages come with titanium retainers anymore and for your pushrod length since im not really sure i know the search feature is helpful as there are many threads on this issue.

Comp 918s work well with the 224 cams. You can get a valve train kit from a sponsor that will cover your needs for the cam swap.

going with titanium will make the valvetrain lighter and get you a little more power but you are just talking about a matter of grams .
red paint is used to show it is new , though i have seen used camshafts with red paint on them .
918 springs are good , just look into the batch number or buy them straight from comp and be sure to make sure what batch you are getting .
need pushrods while you are at it .

Most of the time, they mark, paint a area on the cam for QA control or batch monitoring.. as does GM does for many engine, body, trans parts.. nothing to worry about ...

I just completed a 224R swap. If your stock heads use 7.4 hardened pushrods, go with Patriot Gold duals for around $239 shipped they got new seats, seals, locks, titanium retainers and are dual spring. While you at it LS2 timing chain for under $50. You'll love this cam. Mine is a 112LSA

I told you the paint was normal. My cam had blue paint on it. I went with 7.425 pushrods and my valvetrain is quiet. If you want some added protection i would go with the patriot gold duals. My kit cam with every thing u need

I think people are being quick to bash the 918s. They are a nice light spring that would work fine with what he plans on doing. Just get a new set and they'll work fine.

So pretty much I would buy everything you need to do a H/C combo, except buying the heads, LOL. Seems like you just need the cam.. but if you want to do it right, it adds up. I would get all of the the above.

a balancer bolt holds on the pulley. you cant resuse the one you have now because its TTY design. they are like $3 from Thunder i think.

and the NEW 918's are a good spring for this cam, everyone keeps remebering the stories about the old ones, but they are a very popular spring, and when more are on the market, more stories will arise. i bought a set that i was going to use with my cam, until i cahnged my mind and went with the tqr3, so now i actually NEED doubles. 918's are fine with what you are running
