Default crank bolt covered in oil

How would a crank bolt be covered in oil? I'm not talking about the outside. I mean the threads. I pulled this one out and a lot of oil was all over it. This is the only one I have ever seen like this. Any ideas?

Thanks

Do you know if the crank bolt was ever removed previously? I would guess that the oil was put on the threads when the bolt and/or pulley was replaced.

Thanks for replying guys. Sorry I did not respond sooner. Yes, I have removed the crank bolt before, and yes, I use oil on the threads of my pulley installer. This just seems like more oil than what I used. It doesn't pour out when I remove the bolt or anything like that. It just has the bolt soaked. I do not know the internals of these engines enough to say there's no way oil could get into that area. It certainly doesn't seem possible but I'm no expert. Thanks

My crank bolt had oil on it too when I removed it and I too wondered "how did that get there?"

Don't forget, the inside of the pulley is in with the timing chain and there is oil in there. The red stuff on the new bolt is not loctite, it is sealer to keep the oil in the hub area. Normally the press fit would keep oil in check, I would guess your pulley might have been on the way out.

No, stock bolt goes in dry. ARP bolt goes in lubricated with their lube.

Thanks nuts. My thinking was leaning in that direction but I've never seen this before, even on an SBC which is the same setup essentially except for the keyway.
