Can anyone with a pair of stock ls1 or ls6 heads measure the minimum cross section area in the intake runner?

Thanks guys.

No problem.

Every cylinder head has a minimum cross section, aka: minimum area.

It will be the smallest length and width dimension in the intake port that air passes through.

It could be at the throat (where the valve seats), or where the valve stem protrudes into the intake tract, etc. It may take a series of measurements in the port to find out.

See what you can dig up

Oh i gotcha. Well i got a hard tape measure, a set of feeler gauges, and a spark plug gapper. I dont think i have anything that would be of any use to you as far as accurately measuring goes. I dont have any dial indicaters or anything fancy like that. Sorry. I was thinking it was something easy like the opening of the intake port and i pour concrete so measuring with a hard tape to a 1/16" of and inch is like accurate to me haha.

'Stang, what are you planning to do wth that information? Shouldn't you specify which casting number you are interested in and where the min.CSA is located?

How do you suggest that one accurately measure the area of an irregular shape down inside a port? What precision are you looking for? +/- 1.0 sq inch, or +/- 0.1 sq. in. or ??

At +/- 1.0 sq. in. precision, "2" is a fairly close answer.

Curious minds want to know.

Jon,

For use in a formula.

As for measuring, taking a mold of the port in the past would help.

Just curious if anyone has did that at all.

Either one of the ls1 heads is a start, and I am not picky.

2.XX would be fine by me.

It looks to me like you have found yourself a weekend project.

.908 x 1.949. Not very accurate but should be close. I just happen to have a set of 241's sitting in the basement.

Jon - It would be nice if I had cylinder heads. I sort of need those to do the port mold.

Chucky - Thanks a lot! Where did you measure at?

Someone around here must have a head from a blownup engine that can't be salvaged. You should be able to get one for shipping and handling and a 30 pack of "Girls Light" aka Coors Light or some such.

You could have fun sawing it up to really get some port data.

No, I don't think we have a spare. They have already been treated to disection or used for practice porting.

Good luck!

Jon
