Default 2 piece flywheel?

I bought this clutch and flywheel from a LS6.

The flywheel seems to be 2 pieces, the 2 "plates" move back and forth.

Is this the way it is supposed to be or do I need a dowel pin?

Do I have the right flywheel?

I need help ASAP

thanks

Yes, it is a 2-piece damped flywheel - the inner plate should rotate freely a small amount relative to the main flywheel. The purpose of the 2-piece flywheel is to reduce gear chatter in the transmission.

I've never seen a flywheel like that on an ls1 before. What vendor's setup is that?

I bought it off ebay.

He said it was off of a LS6 crate engine.

"This is a brand NEW Clutch Plate, Pressure Disc and Flywheel just removed from and LS6 Crate Engine. Fits 1997-2004 Corvette LS1 LS6 Including Z06."

I found this threat with the part # in it, It looks like its for a cts-v

https://ls1tech.com/forums/cadillac-cts-v-2004-2007-gen-i/439081-issues-v-wanted-see-if-any-one-has-had-these.html

Its called a duel mass flywheel and you can get them from the dealer...they cut down on clutch chatter but are alittle heaver, I have one on my hawk so yes it will work

Thank you MYHAWKROCKS, thats good news.

I thought it would be heavier also, but I'm putting this in a 97 GMC so it might be better.

I have heard a little heavier flywheel will get a heavier vehicle moving off the line faster.

Does anybody else have info on this?

thanks, Kris

Has anybody else used this flywheel?

It looks thicker, does it require a diferent slave cylinder?

i know some cts-v guys that toss them in the trash , and use a regular flywheel , motor revs a little faster and they pick up a few tenths in the 1/4

far as i know only the cts-v used that , and going with the other posters , to help with noise for the poor caddies owners ears , lmao

YES that is a dual mass flywheel i see them a lot i diesel trucks, seen a ton of them break too, makes for smoother engagement. I dont think i would use one on my car though.

So if I go with a different flywheel would I have to change to a different clutch disk and pressure plate?

It's hard to beleive you would pick up 2 tenths from a little lighter flywheel.

2 tenths seems like a lot but its mass directly on the driveline and if you make it heavier it will effect how easily or quick it spins up.

Its all about weight. The lighter the better for rotating parts.

Now there are some who will say once you get it rolling it's no big deal... I dont subscribe to that. Even though the heavier mass will carry more momentum it still takes more energy to push than a lighter mass.

Yeah, but is a light weight flywheel worth 2 tenths?!? I dont think thats too likely. I cant see it being that big a difference, although of course every little bit helps.

I'm not sure what to do...

If I can just buy a flywheel and use the rest I think I'll go that route.

Do you guys know anybody I could call to find this out?

thanks, Kris

Thats why I said 2 tenths seems like a lot. There is a difference though, how significant I'm not sure, someone else will know. Your right though its in the every little bit helps category.

I have seen similar applications for things like AC clutches on import cars so you can't feel the AC turning off and on. Seems like a bad idea to me. You either have it adjusted for smooth driving or racing...think about the suspension in your car.
