Awhile ago my buddy got a rod knock on this motor. 113,000 miles. We took it out, he put in a LS6. Assuming its the usual damage and nothing serious, crank reuseable, what can I do with it? Is it worth it to rebuild it? I can do all the assembly myself, just parts n machine costs. . .
Best solution?

Sorry, did not notice there was an 'Internal' section.
Also. This will be a daily driver with all accessories and will probably see some sort of forced induction later on. Nothing nasty.

I've read up on the poor oiling system, I think it had passage problems. I'm hoping the crank is still good.
There are so many parts for these, I'm a Gen I guy, this gen 3 is totally new to me. Is there a good kit out there with forged pistons, rods, bearings, gaskets etc?
thank you

I think I'd rather just use what I have. Sure it will cost more in the end, but like it Gen I's it'll give me pride knowing my hands and only my hands built it. I'm thinking the crank is still good, and those are rated for 700+HP. I'd just be throwing in some pistons, rods, rings, bearings, gaskets and such.

Depending on what your goals are for it, you don't NEED to upgrade anything. Have the crank polished or ground and just reuse everything else. Assuming it spun a bearing, you will need two rods replaced. You can pick them up fairly cheap used on here, or new for around $60, I've got 6 spares if you need them.
If you're needing something super reliable you'd be better off to go a different route, but if you're looking for cheap fun you can reuse alot of parts and if it does blow your not out much. What are your intentions for the engine?

Its going into another 3rd gen. I want to keep it FI, so maybe just an LS6 intake. I want to use one of the cheater cam packages and maybe have 400-450 Rear wheel. It will be backed by an automatic trans and a gear such as 3.73. I want it to be my summer daily driver since the IROC I have now will be the strip car. This one will just be stoplight to stoplight. I want it to have a mild sound, almost stock. I am not going to say it will be forced induction, but it might be, so high compression is not a need. I want the 20+ MPG highway that a stock LS1 gives you, but the reliability to drive it everyday but the power to shut down your average 'quick' car on the street.
I know for sure this things needs rings. I kept spraying PB Blaster into the cylinders and a few of them let it leak down into the pan. Is it really safe to re-use the pistons? Should I have the rods Shot peened or replaces with forged ones. I know Aftermarket rod bolts are a must.
