Default I've got a tapping noise after a high rev, can you help.?

I've got an 02' TA with a built 346, and a turbo.. I was out playing around last night and was coming to a stop and down shifted and accidently went to 1st instead of 3rd, and I pulled into the parking lot and noticed a tapping noise. The tapping noise speeds up when I bring the RPM's up. and slows down when the RPM's slow down. Any ideas at what It might be, and how I can check it out..? Thanks....

pushrod, valve spring, rocker...pull a valve cover and check it out. How high did it rev?

It reved pretty high, didn't red line, I didn't really see. I just pulled the driver's side valve cover, that's where the sound seemed to be coming from. Don't really see anything. But, I'm not a mech and don't really know what to look for..

Well, I pulled the valve covers and the push rods. Man these things are pretty. lol. anyway, they look fine. I rolled them on my super expensive glass breakfast table, and they seem to be fine.. The springs seem to be fine as well. I was told that if I pulled the lifters that I may not be able to tell which one is bad. Is this strue.? Thanks guys..

How loud is it tapping? If the rockers and pushrods look okay then it's most likely a collapsed or stuck lifter. Mine made a faint tapping noise after a 7300rpm blast. It seemed to have gone away after a while of driving. Nice toys btw.

Process of elimination, push rods and springs are down hopefully its just the lifter. How is oil pressure?

Heads have to come off to check lifters so go ahead and stick some LS7's or caddys in there when you take a peep. Sometimes you can see them chewed up and sometimes the internals have gone but it will look ok. If the lifter is visibly damaged I would look at the cam too.

A fuel injector can tick also. Try a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint it.

Well, I'm pulling the motor as we speak. The push rods and springs looked ok. I used a mechanics stethoscope and the noise was more like a metallic tapping. The oil pressure was an issue way before all of this. For some reason, when the car warmed up the oil pressure would sometimes drop to "0" if I came to a quick stop. Yeah, scarry.. I wanted to change the rear main seal, and shim the oil pump, so now is a great time to do that. lol.
