Default Stealth cam and tuning

I am thinking of running a sneaky cam, something like a TR220 114. Not necessarily Thunder Racing, just an example. I will run headers and ORY through a stock muffler. Would a 224/224 114 too obvious? Would it lope too much even through the stock muffler? Would either of these cams need real tuning to make within ~5hp of their max hp?

I think the 220 will be obvious also, headers and orp will give that away.

MTI has a "Stealth" cam that might be something for you to consider.

BTW when my cars warmed up with the exhaust thru the SLP dual/dual, it can pass for a stock car with a fairly loud catback. The SLP dual/dual is quieter than stock. I have a friend with a Corsa and our cars are about equally loud at idle.

If you want quiet...

SLP dual/dual and good high flow cats with your headers. Keep the cam in the 113-115 LSA range.

Tuning to get it to idle right is critical to making the car sound "stock" or near stock.

My TR220 sounds VERY stock... and makes great power too, and I'm running on the stock tune also. Most people don't know that my car has an aftermarket cam in it.

That damn MTI stealth cam had like .595 lift. I don't think I'm interested in something that harsh on the valvetrain.

And I could still use stock 03 LS6 springs with the TR220 or the MTI stealth cam right?

Nope, you'll need 918s for either of those cams. To be able to use LS6 springs, you'd have to keep the ramp rates down and all of the newer Comp cams are too fast. The MTI cam has .581" lift BTW. Its an XER 220 lobe. I really liked my TR220 on a 114. Idled well, but it could never pass for stock.

FYI: a TR220 on a 112 sounds just like a TR224 on a 114. Hope this little bit of info helps. You can always raise the idle speed to cover it up a little.

Thats weird, everyone I have ever talked to said the TR220 114 was comparable to stock with a quiet muffler. I guess the MTI stealth cam is on an XER lobe but I didn't think the TR220 was. If its not then the 03 LS6 springs should be good uyp to 600 thousandths right?

You could get by with LS6 springs with the TR220 cam. The TR220 has a lift of .553"

However, if your going to change springs anyway, I think Comp Cams 918s are a better choice. And the 918s are direct replacement for the stock GM spring (no machining or aftermarket retainers needed)

The TR220 isn't an XE-R cam but the ramp rates are very aggressive and very close to XE-R but with a little less lift.

If you want a stealth cam get the LPE GT2-3. 207/220 .571/.578 118.5 LSA.
Dyno Graph
This was through a full Hooker exhaust and unlocked Vigilante 3200. Six-speed cars generally put down 380 rwhp with this cam. It idles just like stock. No lope at all.

OK go ahead and use LS6 springs with a TR or XE-R cam. You'll see what I mean when you rev it to 6000+ rpm and the valves float into the pistons. Call TR and ask Paul what he thinks about that idea. Yeah LS6 springs can handle the lift, but they are NOT STIFF ENOUGH! Their seat pressure is about 90# while the 918s are 130#...big difference.

Since price is a factor buy a $200 '02 LS6 cam and run some Manley springs and Ti retainers from SDPC for $180. This way when you want to upgrade cams you didn't waste money on LS6 springs and you don't have to swap springs twice. $400 for a cam swap is very hard to beat.
