I already ordered the parts and got some of that red loctite. Hopefully this will not happen again!! Looks like the 402 is going to have to wait a little longer!

Same thing happened to me. I was about 10 short for the longest time and couldn't figure out why and sure as hell when I was doing my rebuild I found the same thing that you did. A good chunk of the seal was just missing and I found it later in the pan... Glad you found it!

As long as you have it down that far.. replace every thing you can aford to...

The cam plate looks like it has some wear.. change it, the seal (which the manual said to do everytime the balancer is removed) and pump, timing change..

may cost a little bit more.. but it will last longer and give you a peace of mind that all is good. (unless your planning to goto that new motor soon).

Is there suppose to be a seal on the back of the or behind the cam retainer plate like that? I ask because I don't think mine has one and I've been having oil pressure problems since the cam install. I've had it apart 3 times made sure the cam retainer plate was tight replaced the o-ring, etc. I was beginning to think it was the bearings but know this has thrown me for a loop again.

Yes!! Theres supposed to be a gasket there. It actually comes on the retainer plate already attached. Mine just came apart. I bet that your issue as well.

The retainer plate has the orange seal or (o-ring) made on it, Witch is what blew on yours . There is not any other gaskets behind the retainer plate

Got the plate, cam gear and chain back on. I just have to go get a bigger torque wrench to get the pulley back on.
