Default Oil consumption on new motor

I was wondering if anyone knew about what is normal oil usage during the break in period on a new motor? I know it's going to use more while the rings are seating but about how much should I be using?

When i built my moter I started it up and let it run untill i burpted all the air out of the coolant. then i changed the oil before it ever left the garage. After that I changed it again at 500 miles and I didn't have any loss in oil.

What break-in procedure are you using?

What I am going to do is let the engine idle to operating temp.. apprx. 15 min. Kill it, check fluid levels. Then I will prob change the oil again and then go out and beat on it to make sure the rings seat properly .

I followed this theory damn near to a tee. It's got about 100 miles on it now and I've been babying it til it reaches operating temp and then beating on it pretty good. It's been to redline a number of times.

I do have larger ring end gap clearances because I plan on being pretty heavy on the bottle here once I put a few thousand miles on this thing. How heavily will that influence oil usuage? I only ask because I seem to have burned some since I first fired this thing up.

All of my clearances are set up on the loose side with the forged internals for room to grow later down the road. I'm sure this plays into burning some oil till it gets warmed up.

I just wanted some others input.

What ring gaps did you set up?

.024 top ring .026 second ring. This is what TSP suggested me to set them to.
