Default cover seals

I got the oil pickup tube on pretty good, so now I'm trying to get the rear cover seal off, and I thought it was supposed to come out in one piece, but it didn't at all. A lot of the rubber looks like it's still "caked on." I took a pic of it: http://zigzautonotes.googlepages.com...cover_seal.jpg

I'm hesitant to go any further because I don't want to marr the cover metal. Do you guys think I should bring it by a shop and have them take care of it? Or do you think it's a better idea for me to order a new rear cover/front seal from GMPP because the seals are already preinstalled?

I've never messed with the cover seals before but I've read that you need a special installer. Seems to me a simple press would work fine as long as you protect the inner seal from tearing. But like I said I haven't messed with them before. Price the cost of taking it to a dealership and what a new cover would cost. Go with whatever is cheapest. The dealership should have the special installer and should know how to do it. Looking at the picture you don't have the entire seal removed yet. Try to resist beating it with a hammer and screwdriver!

Default dumb question about gaskets

Got the seals taken care of. LMR is the ****!!

Does it matter which way the gaskets go on (front cover, rear cover, and oil pan)? It looks like it won't matter but I just want to make sure...

Default sent wrong gaskets? help me out TSP!

Well, been a while, but I finally managed to get my head gaskets and ARP studs from TSP. Got the studs in, but I think my gaskets are the wrong ones!

Here's what they looked like right when I pulled them out of the plastic pack they came in:
http://zigzautonotes.googlepages.com/wrong_gaskets1.jpg
http://zigzautonotes.googlepages.com/wrong_gaskets4.jpg

If you look closely in the first pic, you can see the stamped numbers on the gaskets that say 12558809 and 12558810. What I ordered was 12498543 (which is what you can see on the plastic pack).

Maaaaan, not only that, but one of the gaskets had a little tear in it:

I ordered em from TSP so maybe I'll give them a call on Monday and let them know. They seem cool every time I talk to em so I'm sure they'll help me out.

THAT...is a good question. I still need to get my 78mm FAST intake and my FLP headers which I'm savin up my pennies for. They should be here by end of November. So hopefully sometime in December I can get it tuned on the engine dyno.

Hey, I just found this thread while searching for something and read every post - how is the engine rebuild progressing? I noticed you said the engine was 10 years old - how many miles were on it? Great pics, too!!!

Guess it's been a while since I've updated this thread haha. Since my last post I've gotten the heads all installed, the pushrods, rockers, valve covers, intake manifold, throttle body, headers, oil filter, and I just got the water pump, coil packs, NGK spark plugs and msd plug wires on the other day, so here's how it's looking now:

Yeah the engine was a 98, and I think the guy who had it before me said it only had 500 miles on it but who knows really. That dude was shady...that's another story.

Anyway, I was actually searching for proper breakin procedure for LS1s and this post came up so I thought I'd reply back.

Are you planning on building one soon, MrEddie?
