Default LS1 Gone, new 408...what to call it>>

The LS1 has been replaced with a TSP408 built on the 6.0 block. I know the LS1 was a GEN3, is my new engine considered to be a GEN4?

I also had an issue while puting the top end on the 408, one of the holes for the alternator was not there, I had to drill and tap.

If it's an iron 6.0 block, call it a Gen III.

If it's an aluminum LS2 block, call it a Gen IV.

I actually read an article explaining the differences between Gen III and IV engines last night. The differences are so minimal, I think it was foolish to call them two different animals. They're all LS_ based, they should have left it at that.

But there is enough difference and enough different blocks available that the Gen3/4 makes them more easily distinguishable. Like stated above, the iron 6.0L are still considered a Gen3 block.

This is a common findings for those who have not researched on using a Truck Iron Block with LS1 front Accessories, Many threads on this subject. No problem, just drilled/tapped as required.

As the other have stated. You should call the engine based on what block was used. So.. Gen III w/AFR heads would work from me...

That would depend on what the 6.0L block that was used to built on.. a Gen III or a Gen IV block..

To me, it just comes down to its either a Gen III or Gen IV block.. don't start making up new Hybrid names and confussing everyone.

There were a few reversions of the old SBC.. from 265 to 400 cid.. but it still was called Gen I / SBC !
That didn't change till they had the LT1 Gen II, but many still called it a SBC.

my .02 cents

Agreed! Especially on the SBC/LT1 stuff. Who knows why they do things the way they do...
