Default Help! Aftermarket cam acting very strange

I installed a LG Motorsports G5-X3 cam on a 110lsa in my LS1. I made all the valvetrain upgrades, installed LS-6 heads and intake and had LG put a tune on my computer through the mail. The motor is a fresh rebuild with all good parts.

The engine is running very strangly. The car idles like a stock cam. Here is a link to a video of the idle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGr80r5o2Pw

The car is running ok, but does not have very much power at all. I road race and was passed on the straights by LS-1's with restrictor plates!

I am at the point of pulling the cam and sending it back to LG Motorsports to have them check the specs on it. I think it must not be what it is supposed to be.

I hate to pull the cam if it can be anything else. I have done several LS-1builds and never run into anything like this.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Whats the car idling at in the Vid? FWIW it doesn't sound like a G5X3 in the vid, but that could be because the car is idling at 1k+ rpms. The 2 local cars i have ridden in with G5X3's chop much harder and pull super hard up top.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have heard that the dots might be off on the cam/crank. Would this cause the car to idle smooth but not have much power?

I installed my cam and it idled like it does in the video at about 650 rpm. Once i finished tuning and and am running 24 degrees timing it doesnt sound much different than stock at 900 rpm. Extremely dissapoint. You might be loosing power because you dinged your ls6 valves. The MS# on a 110 i would say is probably pretty close with PTVC.

Just a thought, cause i have seen people do some pretty thoughtless things before (not saying you did). But, is it possible when your swaping out the cams the stock one went back into it? Like i said, i have seen people do some dur type moments when working on cars.

I don't think so, but the car was put togeter quickly.

I think I am going to hook it to a scanner to see what the timing is.

Any ideas what the average timing would be on a big cam like this.

What would the timing be if the timing chain was off be one tooth or so?

Thanks a lot guys. I am about ready to pull it out, I just don't want to if their is anyway to check something before.

At idle the timing is NOT locked in, it will be jumping around!

The only time it locks in is at WOT.

just pull a valve cover off and measure the lift of the pushrod with a micrometer, or you can see when the valves open and close and call back lg and see what they say.

You can look at the cam that you swapped out to see if there are markings on it to see if you put the stock one back in.

It's bad to say this but I think you put the stock cam back in. A cam on a 110 lsa will sould pretty wild no matter how the tune is.

Just an update guys. I pulled the cam and had Comp Cams profile it. It is the correct cam.

Here are the specs.

234/243 .597/.609 110LSA.

So now what?

Any ideas. I checked the timing chain and it was aligned with the dot on the cam gear at six o'clock. The crank gear did not have a dot, it had two "0" at 12 and six o'clock. We aligned the 0 with the keyway at about 2 o'clock. The other option would have been with the keyway at about 7 o'clock.

It is an aftermarket, double roller timing chain.

Help!

I don't know where to go from here.

did you send the cam to them to measure or just told them the number that was on the cam? If you just told them the number then it could still be off. You need to measure the can yourself to see how it really specs out.

I sent the cam to Comp Cams. They measured directly.
