Default HELP!!!! want cam but not sure for a LS1 trans am

I need some feedback. I have a 99 trans am that is bone stock with no upgrades. I want a cam that I can pretty much put in it with no other mods right now. I just bought the car about 2 months ago and I have put a ram air hood on it and Z06 wheels but that is it. I know it will need to be tuned but that is all I want to have to do for now.

ANY SUGGESTIONS???????

A cam should not be the first thing you do and any cam that does not need new springs is prbably not worth your time. I would wait till you have all the bolt-on that way a cam will really help you. no scence in tearing into the engine just so you have to do it again.

At least do lid, intake manifold, throttle body, headers, exhaust cutout first otherwise its probably not worth the effort or money to do a cam now. You need to replace springs and pushrods with a cam. a ls6 oil pump is probable good too while youre at it.

If you are not doing it yourself than you are looking at close to $2000 price tag for all the parts, install, and tune. For a cam.

there are some cams that have proven good gains with stock heads and stock manifolds.

the cheaTR from thunder racing is one. you'll have to change springs though. which isn't a big deal really. and you'll want to put a new set of pushrods in, and probably oil pump and timing chain.

those are basically the bare minimum for a cam swap.

stock parts are barely up to snuff for stock engines

okay, I do plan on putting exhaust on but what sounds VERY good with a cam and what is a lid. I am assuming that your talking about for the air cleaner. Excuse my ignorance, but I havent gotten alot of knowledge about ls1 engines. i am an old school guy

Yes a lid is for the air box, its a good starting point. There are also a lot of good stickies at the top of all the post.....those should help you get yourself familiar with these wonderful motors. start up there and fill up on great info.

You really need to read the sticky's first because if you don't know what a lid is then how the hell are you going to install a cam? Good luck but don't do a cam first.
