Default 5.3L head question

okay so i'm looking at getting some 5.3 heads to put on my 98 ls1 block and was wondering what the best ones to get are and what do i need to do to them thats worth the money.

i'm waiting on getting a cam until last because i'm gonna get a custom grind for it.

ive got the stage 2.5 5.3s from texas speed, they work well and you can get them used easily for 1k.

well i can get stock ones for around 100 bucks, i was just wanting to know what the main things to do to them that will help.

i'm def gonna get em ported and polished for sure.


i was just wondering if some of the newer ones might be a litte better than the older ones or visa versa

Mine came from TEA. They were like $1600 with no core. Brand new castings used. Very pleased with them. Are you planning to port/polish yourself, or have it done?

i'm good with a machinist so i'll probably have him do it. i would buy some heads ready to go but i don't have the money like that to throw at them.

what consists of a 1.5 stage heads?

You need to put 2.02/1.57 valves in them.

the 706 and 862 head have a smaller itv 1.89 and you would need at least 2.00 or 2.02 to take atvantage of the higher compresion of 11.8:1 on a ls1

Pretty much the same as a Stage 2, but with stock 1.55 exhaust valves to keep the cost down.
