Default Has anyone actually broken a stock timing chain?

I read about replacing the stocker all the time...I even upgraded to a dual roller, but has anyone actually broken a stock chain?

Yes, and several have broke the LS2 chain. Double is not guarantee either, Rollmaster doubles have had issues as well. Only chains I have not found issues with is the Katech chain (which is a JWIS chain) and the IRL chain (which was a hand assembled Renold chain). Note also that JWIS (or sometimes called IWIS) chains are not all the same. JWIS actually makes several chains of the same pitch, and varying quality. Name alone is not enough.

A bigger benefit is the use of the timing chain damper. This goes a long way in preventing chain breakage as it helps with the off throttle whipping.

When i pulled my stock chain off when i spun a rod bearing at 37000 miles with a ms4 cam and head package on it for 10000 miles the stock chain was so stretched you could grab the cam sprocket and twist and get a couple degrees out of it lol.

I was wondering the same thing. I did my second cam swap last weekend, and ended up going with the ls2... It was a pita to change, but have a better piece of mind now.

wow...thanks for the posts. I swapped my stock chain too - but at the time, I hadn't heard of any problems...so I always wondered if it was a good thing to do, or just more money spent on snake oil.

I'm using a new stock ls1 chain with my setup, no problems so far only a few hundred miles on it though.
