Default Lose to a girl lately?

Hey guys, new girl on the forum. Need your advice quick.

My LS1 has 75k, and has been burning oil for as long as I've owned it.. it hasn't gotten any worse but I think I add 1 qt every 1500 miles so by the time I change to oil that about 2 qts/oil change..

So who knows when my valve will completely give out on me and destroy my engine.

Should I get an aftermarket powertrain warranty or should I wing it?

What do you think?

PS I might post pictures later..

What kind of oil are you running? Pull the vac line off of the PCV valve does it have oil in it? Is the PCV valve good?

I say check the PCV valve (it's in your driver side valve cover sticking out i believe) and if thats all fine and you're running synthetic switch to non synthetic oil. If you have always been using synthetic maybe the previous owner didnt and you WILL burn oil then. If switching to non-synthetic makes it go away then thats most likely your problem.

Other things to check, pull a spark plug and see if it has oil or it and on the threads. This would indicate that a valve seal may be leaking. You could always do a compression check too to see if a piston ring isnt sealing correctly as well.

The LS1 engine is known for burning oil in some cases due so the lifter design i believe. Also if you dont plan on modding the car then i guess the aftermarket warranty would be a good idea but if you plan on modding it i doubt it they will ever honor the warranty on a modded car.

PS 10 to 1 says your are a guy just wanting a fast answer

I could be something other than a valve seal. Could be piston rings, or the pcv system. The pcv's in the ls1 suck. You can take the throttle body off and and see if the intake has oil in it. If so you may want to try a catch can. What do you mean by after market powertrain... whole new engine? Do you have any goals for your car? Whats your budget?

Seriously though. There are a couple of tests you can do to find out where i'ts passing oil. I could be as simple as valve guide seals or something more serious like rings.

what weight oil are you using? It may help to change brands or weight a little bit.

That amount of oil consumption is not that bad, ALL engines burn off oil it is inevetable, but the amount burnt off is what is important, you may have a minor issue but you are over reacting by being scared that your engine/"vavle" as you said will give out on you, and no dont buy and extended warranty, if you never use it the money is lost, and if there is something wrong then the warranty will cost about as much as a motor anyway depending on the warranty.

If it were mine I wouldnt worry about it, I put between 1-2 quarts an oil change in mine. If you get to a quart every thousand or more then ther may be an issue, still it wont shut the car down.

My last car I scratched a cylinder wall when a spark plug tip came off from spraying N20, drove it for a while using a quart every 2-3 days.

When I first got my car, I was running dino oil in it and noticed that I burned a bit of oil between changes. I decided to swap over to Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 and haven't had a problem since. Worth a try if your currently on dino oil. I know the effect probably should of been the opposite (burn more oil with synthetic) but I guess I got lucky.

GM says 1qt. per 1000 miles is within "normal" range for a brand new vehicle I wouldn't worry about it but I would be PO"ed if my new vehicle used that much oil.

All good advice above but start with the simplest thing and just check your PCV valve as Shawn M. said and if you replace it make sure you get the updated "fixed orifice" type. Then go from there if it concerns you.

I must be the exception. I only burned half a quart for 3k, which is about what my lt1, 406 and 3.8 burned off in that time.

Maybe you have a lighter foot? Harder I drive the more oil my cars have used, what oil are you using.

As for oil recommendation I myself use Castrol GTX but above Mobil 1 was recommended, for what its worth the new Pennzoil Platinum has shown to be quite a bit better than the current Mobil 1.

**** mine must be an exception, it don't use a drop and I run synthetic.

I would buy the aftermarket warranty if you're not planning on mods. That doesn't seem to be an uncommon amount of oil consumption though....LS motors are notorious for consumption issues

think your stretching a bit there, ALL engines burn oil as I said before by design all do, there is no way for them not too, oil is stored in the crosshatch in the cylinder walls and burns off under combustion. And if you have a LS based motor and your not burning oil then you not driving it, like at all, as in not even starting it lol. Nah jk on the last part, but I have noticed big differences in the amount I use based on my driving so you may also be a light foot compared to me and others with higher consumption.

And as far as warranties, F*#@$ warranties they will just claim you raced it anyway or find something, by the way IMPORTANT note, insurance companys wont approve the claim unless its BROKE not if its worn, you are not insured against engine wear you are insured against failure. Besides oil burning wont cause failure anyway unless you let it run out of oil then they will figure that out too, so again pointless to pay the 1k $ + for it.

but it does only have 25k on it if that makes a difference

hell yeah that makes a difference, im starting to see a trend in this thread, the people claiming to have little to no oil burn off all have stated they are using synthetic, in my cars I havent been able to tell a difference.

my current engine has 150k so its gonna burn it, but I dont care because I know in the grand scheme it means nothing except a trip to vatozone for some more oil

My LT1 has 160k on it and doesnt burn even a drop of oil. It's used mobile 1 10w 30 synthetic every one of those 160,000 miles.
