408 vs. 418, Rectangle Port vs. Cathedral, N20?
Hey all,
So after my 346 blew, I have been taking my time getting a new motor as I don't want to rush into anything and make any mistakes. I have narrowed down engine size to 408 or 418 and looking to be 11.3:1-11:5:1 CR, the real decision will be whether I spray or not (408-spray 418-N/A). Inside of the motor size I'm really lost as to what H/I setup to go with..
Don't care much for dyno #'s (500 rw would be nice), would like to be 10's on motor.
I don't have all that much money so as much as I want big budget external parts, it's not going to happen, I'm spending all my extra pennies on Callies insides.
Option #1: 408, Middle-Big Cam, 150-200 shot, Ported L92's, L76 Intake.
Option #2: 408, Middle-Big Cam, 150-200 shot, MTI Ported LS6 Heads, Ported 90/90 setup
Option #3: 418, Middle-Big Cam, MTI Ported LS6 Heads, Ported 90/90 or 92/92.
Option #4: Your Idea...

I'm running a ccperformance 408 with WCCH L92's and a big shot, and I'm hoping to go bottom 10's/high 9's on motor. And bottom nines, and maybe break high 8's on the n2o. So its very possible to make good power na with the 408.

I would do a l92 shortblock. Compstar crank and rods and a good set of pistons. The bigger bore will net you more power. if you have the extra money do some nice cathedral port heads and a fast. If not, get some l92s and whatever intake you wanna run with a cam matched to it. 10's shouldnt be a problem whatever you choose as long as you have the suspension to support it.

Go with the largest bore you can find (LS7?) with a 4" stroke crank, beef up the bottom with quality parts, and you'll be 10's on motor and 9's on spray. Going with the largest bore will allow you to unshroud the heads to get the maxmum flow. Most will tell you to stay with 4" stroke for max reliability on the spray. If budget wasn't in question, obviously it would be a different discussion.
