difference between LS6 & LS2?
besides one being a 5.7L and the other a 6.0L
and with the LS2 having a half point more in compression , bigger T-body, more cubes, how come it was only rated at 400HP and the later 02-04 LS6 motors were rated at 405.
was one over rated or another under rated
I know in a private test one of the mags engine dyno tested a brand new stock LS6 creat motor, with all the EFI stuff hooked up just like it would be in a 02-04 ZO6 vette , the motor made 426 HP or so , it made about 20 more hourses than it was rated at.
well anyway i am picking up a almost new (2,000) mile, complete LS2 that came out of a wrecked 07 vette.
wanted to reasearch it a little

I think it was in the tune and the intake. If you remember awhile back the LS2 vettes and Trailblazer SS's were picking up like almost 30 rwhp from a tune. The LS6 was tuned a little better from the factory.
I had an 06 6 spd vette and the best I could muster from it at the track was a 12.80 bone stock. My buddy had an 04 zo6 and he was running 12.40-12.50 passes. We weigh the same, so no difference there. The cars were raced as they came from the factory, so the curb weight is close to the same. We switched cars to see if we drive differently. No change there he ran 12.80's in my car and I went 12.47 in his.
When I sold my vette I kept in contact with the new owner, He dynoed it stock and it made 356.7 to the wheels. He put on long tubes CAI and a tune and it now puts down 400 to the wheels. CAI does nothing on the dyno and the longtubes pick up a little, but I think most of that was in the tune.

Quick and dirty comparison....
2001 LS6 (Vette only): 3.89" bore block, 243 heads, Cam specs 207/217 @.50 .525/.525 lift 116 LSA, hollow stem valves, ls6 manifold, & only offered with a manual transmission.
2002-2004 Vette (CTS-V's until they went to the LS2): 3.89" bore block, 243 heads, Cam specs 204/218@.50 .550/.550 lift 117.5 LSA, hollow stem valves, ls6 manifold, & only offered with a manual transmission.
2005 and later LS2: 4.00" bore block, 243 heads, Cam specs 207/217 @.50 .525/.525 lift 116 LSA (2001 LS6), solid valves, crap manifold with a 90mm tb, along with Torque management configured into the ECM (offered with manual or auto trans).
There were 2 versions of the LS6.
The first one was only made for a single year, then they swap'd out for a higher lift cam.

2002-2004 LS6 Cam specs 204/218@.50 .550/.550 lift 117.5 LSA
The first cam has a slightly larger on the intake lobe but has less lift = less power. The second one has a slightly smaller intake lobe size but has increased lift along with a wider LSA = more power.
Due to the 405hp LS6 not having torque management, it was not allowed to be mated to automatic transmissions. The LS2 having torque management was able to be warrantied by GM with an automatic trans in the 2005 and later gm vehicles.

ok I guess the bigger cam in a LS6 along with a lighter valve train and better tune would show up in a performance way .
Do u think the lighter Valves would make a difference?
and what where the valves in a LS6? sodium filled exhaust , waht about the intakes?

While yes a tune is worth 20hp or so on a stock car, long tubes is where the power gain comes from.

Necro alert; an idiot totaled my cts and I am looking to upgrade to a V.
I have been looking at 06-07, and was ruling out the 05s based on engine but mileage as well.
Any thoughts?

I wish I could find one local. If I get a 05, I have already decided to change the rear and the axles.......
I cannot find any other reason to NOT get an 05 other than 06 typically have less miles....
Please enlighten me otherwise.

To the thread bumper, I'd say buy whichever car you find with miles and condition that you like. The diff can be replaced (and may have been) but it's not like it's glass. Plenty of '04-05 guys on the original diff.
When I was shopping, I only looked at '06-07, but that's because I wanted a car under factory warranty. Now there are unlikely to be any '07s still under full factory warranty, they would have to have been a very late delivery. Most would still have the powertrain warranty though.

What the heck is a 48 relux wheel??
06-07 Vette LS2's had the 58x reluctor wheel. 05 LS2 Vette was the older style 24x reluctor.
My 05 A4 Vette dynoed 340 at the wheels bone stock. It went 8.35 in the 1/8th mile in stock trim. A dyno tune removing all TqMgt, changing some trans settings etc etc yielded a whopping 341 at the wheels. It went 8.35 in the 1/8th mile next time out, no change whatsoever. I didn't dyno it after the install of ZO6 exhaust manifolds, cats and mid pipes but it went 8.08 in that trim. I say that is an honest 25hp increase. Tune=1HP exhaust =25
