Default LQ9 Build ideas

Hey guys,

Looking to build up an LQ9 and swap that into my camaro.

Right now i am thinking of making a 402 stroker from a small overbore or hone 0.005 combined with 4" crank.

This is slightly a budget build, i only want to spend roughly 1500.00 dollars on everything (excluding the block and accessories)

Thoughts?

Unless you can forge your own rotating assembly and do all the machine work yourself, you're going to spend a helluva lot more than $1500.

Just a basic 402 rotating assembly is going to cost more than that. Then you have balancing, machine work, assembly. I would bet you're going to spend in the 3-4000 dollar range when all said and done.

I meant 2500 not 1500 typo.

Im still debating how i want to do this. Money isnt really the issue with this build its the time table i have. I only have about 14 months before i move, so i need to have this atleast sitting in the car.

Even 2500 is going to be a stretch, like I said even a basic 402 assembly is going to be like $1700. Then the rest of the parts that make up the shortblock + machine work is going to be over your budget.

14 months is a long time, there are plenty of vendors out there that have 402s already built and ready to go, or can do them in about 2 weeks.

Usually about $3500, just for the shortblock, but you may be able to offset that cost by selling your old engine and parts. You also need to account for all the little stuff that adds up, such as gaskets, lifters, oil pump, etc.

Yeah^ You can always sell your older motor to make up for the cash that you will spend on the 402.

Im just gonna tell you what i plan to do.
I have a blown lq9 (complete bottom end/block is trashed). the plan is to buy another lq9 block for ~500, then buy a forged 408 rotating assemble for ~2,000, then get PRC stage 3 ls6 heads ~2,000, and a custom cam ~400. I have a FAST 92/92 setup already and some parts i plan to sell to help offset the cost ie ported 5.3 heads and miscellaneous parts. Looking to make 500whp

**update also looking into LS3 top end now

Hate to be a Debbie downer but stuff adds up quickly. Heck just in a gasket kit I spent $300.00 alone.

I was really wanting to go down this route thinking it was the money saving option. I found a low mileage lq9 short block for cheap. what would it be just to swap to a 4" crank and new rings and bearings? I understand that's not the smart route to go but like the op said I'm on a tight *** budget and just want an alternative for my daily. I'll do a full build when I get out of school and get that "better paying" job they say you get after college haha

You can't just swap in the crank, it's all or nothing. You need to use connecting rods and pistons to match the crank.

Why couldn't you just do the crank? I understand the doing things out of order and not half asses stuff part. But I don't understand why it couldn't be done? Is it just the fact of using old and new parts? Or do you have a legit ament reason

It puts the pistons too far out of the hole.
