Default Gasser? Over fender exhaust?

I’m putting a 5.3 into a 1951 Desoto wagon. Cars of this age had weird driver side steering and I cannot find over the frame exhaust for an LS. Ive called Speedway and searched all the sites. There’s no clearance between the motor and frame.

I think a fender well or gasser exhaust header would work. The only I can think of without making a complete custom header setup is going with some BBC fenderwell headers and cutting off the flange and welding in an LS flange.

Any thoughts?

Flip the truck manifolds exit flange forward, turbo-style, and run the pipes down under the front crossmember.

Mustang headers will work if you cut the flanges off and weld on LS stuff. The LS engine is the best SBF Chevy ever built. That might open up a new avenue for you to look at.

OK, I didn't speak correctly last time. Truck manifolds, exit forward, UPSIDE DOWN, then run pipes down, close together under the front crossmember.
HOPEFULLY this might work?
Fingers crossed....

I hate to say it, but it looks like you'll be better off just starting from scratch.

Sometimes starting with something and trying to modify it to work how you want ends up being more work than starting from scratch. I think this is one of those cases.

To me, it looks like there is room for the front 2 or 3 tubes to go between the engine and frame/steering, the other 1 or 2 would have to go out around the frame and join back underneath to the collector. Look up some 68-72 Chevelle BBC headers for reference.

Don't be afraid to blaze a trail and do your own thing. Buy some mandrel bends, a pair of flanges, fill your Argon tank and stock the fridge with your favorite beverage. That's the making of one helluva weekend right there.

I found Tri Five BB Chevy fenderwell headers. I can weld (grind mostly) and I think I can swap out the flange. Patriot H8035 looks like they will fit.

Yep, pretty much what I will have to do. I couldn’t find any SBF gasser/fenderwell headers, but BB Chevy are REALLY close.

Your work? Beautiful stuff Cole! The do the outer tubes bolt onto the rest of the pipes below?

No, not my work. Just a pic from Google to give you an idea of how to run the pipes.

These are common large tube headers for the '68-'72 GM A body (Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Regal). The tubes that go out around the frame slip fit into the collector below.

Give it a try yourself if you're feeling brave or call a custom builder and see what they suggest. Two that I can recommend are Lemons Headers http://www.lemonsheaders.com/ and Elston headers http://elstonheaders.com/
