Default 455 CID LSX shortblock???

Anyone? I know there are a couple of companies that make 454's, but I have a Trans Am, and I want a 455 for it.

LMAO

don't take this the wrong way, we built a 427 for a guy with a C5 long time ago

he was more interested in the 427 emblems we were putting on the car then the actual motor itself, provided it was a 427.

454 was a Chevy motor 455 was a Pontiac motor. Trans Am is a Pontiac car. If you need me to draw you a picture too, I can probably do that.

So after talking with a few different companies about the 455 LSX, I have been informed that anything above 440 CID is probably not a good idea on a street car because the cylinder walls will be rather thin. OH well. I really don'g have $10K to throw down on a motor anyway. I wonder how F-Body friendly the LS3 will be.....

4.2 bore and 4.1 stroke = 454. bore spacing on the lsx is 4.4

4.4 bore spacing - 4.2 bore = .2 wall thickness between cyls

.2 wall spacing between cyls / 2 cyls per wall = .1 wall thickness per cyl.

a tenth wall thickness per cylender with a 4.200 bore on an LSX Iron block. Explane to me how this is too thin when darton sleeves in an alluminum block can go all the way down to a .075 for FI applications?

A couple sponsors here for this site offer 454 lsx shortblocks WITH warrantys. I don't think there would be a problem... Especially since there's already a number of 454 ci street cars on the road already.

I think the problem is more with the headgasket seal between the cylinders than cylinder wall with F/I applications. I have heard 4.187 is about the max you should go on bore sizes to keep from blowing head gaskets between cylinders.

Just do a 421. That was a Pontiac engine too. Here are a couple ways to do it with common cranks:

4.145" x 3.900"
4.100" x 4.000"
4.040" x 4.100"

And the 421...

If you really wanna be technical, include the combustion chamber volume into the total cubic inch volume and your motor isnt a 454 or 455...so trying to make a 455 instead of a 454 is pointless.

If you build a 454" (4.125 bore x 4.250 stroke) it isnt a 454 or 455...its a 454.377 plus CC volume of the heads...so you ever be exact.

This seems to be very controvertial subject.

First off ci is a swept volume, and does not include the cc's of the chamber, or the pistons or anything else. It is simply bore area x stroke.

I am building a 455. How? It is going to be a 4.190 bore with a 4.125 stroke. I have the block already which is a RED's Darton MID LS7. The head gaskets can be ordered from Cometic with a 4.200 hole. I have already talked to them.

These are a couple pics of the block with a 4.00 piston in it.

You do need to run evans coolant, I have already ordered an Evans Pump and their NPGR coolant.

Mine will also be topped off by this. We are just mocking it up on top of my 412 before it comes out.

A 455 has been done before I am not the first. The one below was also a RED's MID LS1.

http://www.gmhightechperformance.com..._am/index.html

Any way I thought I would add a little information.

If you add the thickness of the head gasket, I would assume with all 8 cylinders that would = 1 cubic inch so it's going to end up a 456 LOL j/k

I really don't want to offend anyone by saying this, but... Does it really matter a rat's dick whether you have a 454 or a 455? Maybe it did when the original 455 and 454 BIG BLOCKS were out, but that would be because they were ENTIRELY different engines. Pontiac heads wouldn't work on Chevy blocks. IMHO, it should matter less about the final cubic inch and more about the parts making it. But whatever. Throw on your 'Bandit' jacket, a cowboy hat and add a whip antenna to it when your done so you have the whole package since that seems to be what you're going for -- a look instead of a result.

My $.02.

Why do you think some one came up with a 427 LSx or the 454 LSx, I bet other displacement would have been easier. Some of us are old enough to rememebr the old cars and some even owned them. You are right I am spending a little extra to have a 455, but if you are already shelling out your hard earned money why not get what you really want, instead of settling for almost. Besides I wanted an aluminum block since the LSx is stupid heavy and not going to be seen in any autocross car.

Actually for me no whips antennae, or hood birds, just these center caps.

They look a lot like these.

Do you know what cars came with those or what it stands for? If you are over 35, you might.

Some of us like the nostalgia in the cars which includes the displacement. Have a good look at the next Camaro, Challenger or current Mustang, you might notice they have a lot of traits from the old cars. It does matter to some of us and Detroit has noticed too.
