1) Pull the crank reluctor and swap it for a 24x tooth reluctor wheel and install a 1x cam sprocket.
2) Ensure that you have a 4x cam sprocket and pick yourself up a 58x to 24x converter module.
-You will also need to drill and tap the block to accept LS1 knock sensors and extend the knock sensor connectors down to each side of the block.
-You will need to extend the cam sensor connector up to the front of the engine. On a '98 harness you should have an exposed 3 prong connector near the EGR pigtail. That is the cam sensor interrim connection. You can extend it from there, makes it easier.
-One last thing PCM wise, you can plug up the LS3 MAP sensor port on the side of the intake and then twist open the vacuum port on the back of the manifold and connect your LS1 MAP sensor to their using a length of vacuum hose.
After a tune the LS3 will, if all goes well, run perfect in your '98.

You can use your stock LS1 harness and PCM. You have to do one of two things:
1) Pull the crank reluctor and swap it for a 24x tooth reluctor wheel and install a 1x cam sprocket.
2) Ensure that you have a 4x cam sprocket and pick yourself up a 58x to 24x converter module.

This post pretty mch summarizes what I was looking for.
I still have another question:
PCM and engine management wise, does the same apply to an LS7 swap? I am using a 2002 Camaro harness and PCM. Is there any diffeence in the coils?
Thanks for any advise.

I assume it does, you basically need to use LS1 sensors and LS1 reluctors to use the LS1 PCM (1x cam reluctor, 24x crank reluctor, LS1 MAP, LS1 knock sensors, etc). The thing you will have to check is if the LS2/3/7 (or whatever coil packs you intend to use) coil pack connector connects to the LS1 engine harness pigtail. If it does not, then I don't see why You couldn't cut the connector off the coil pack harness and solder and heat shrink the LS1 coil pack harness pigtail in place so that it will plug into the engine harness. Look up diagrams before you cut anything though.

Where do you get the module mentioned above? Sorry for a newb question...I pretty much only haunt the LT1 section, but I do have an 06 LS2 sitting in a crate complete less intake/TB and a pair of L92 heads on the shelf. Intended to go carb'd in something older, but this thread caught my eye.

At first thought....I was all excited about that little box. Sounds like a good alternative to pulling down an engine, locating, and swapping parts.....then I thought about what if it goes out and I'm out on the road somewhere? Or if it's discontinued/obsolete? (Can anyone say Delteq "brain"?) I guess I'd be much safer to break the engine down and swap parts so that it stays serviceable, huh?

As far as the converter box goes id do your homework on it, the have failed a few times and then your stuck on the side of the road. Might want to look into getting the 24X reluctor wheel installed in the crank, i would if i were you.

well that's why I am looking into that GM LS376/480 controller kit. Comes with ECU, harness, etc. Only downside is drive by wire pedal... but then I wouldn't need to get the car tuned for the new engine. It's $10 this way, $10 that way kind of thing, I'm looking at what is the least amount of headache and what will make the car run fine for however long!
