Default 5.3L stroked

I've got the new 5.3L LY5 engine; can it be stroked out? I know the LY5 is based on the LS2, but when I stumbled on this site (http://www.strokermotor.com/RALS1408.htm), a few ideas came to mind. If I could drop that 4" crank in, I'd be able to pull about 5.9L of stroked displacement out of this engine. I'm going for more torque...I figure this is the way to do it. Is it doable?

you could bore that block to the ls1 bore size then use a 4" crank and have yourself a 6.3L(383ci) just like a stroker ls1

If I'm gonna go to all the trouble of boring it out as well as swapping cranks, I might as well stick a bigger engine in there lol.
So it can use the 4" crank? Are there any clearance issues with the skirts or the camshaft?

you do realize if you go to a 4" crank you will need new pistons and rods also and have the rotating assy balanced,, so why wouldnt you bore it??

yeah it is possible, but i would get the stuff from a sponsor. that site does not list the manufacturers, so you have no idea what kind of cheap crap they are using.

I've also heard the walls get a little thin on the LY5; I'm just going on what I've read.

I haven't made up my mind just yet. Still exploring options.

The big problem with this idea is that there are no commonly available pistons for that bore with a standard rod and compression distance for a 4" stroke crank. You would either need custom pistons (read $$$$$) or just bore it to a standard size like 3.905... Then your piston options are nearly unlimited and you will save money vs the custom piston tiny bore option. We just put together a 359 inch 5.3 (3.910" bore X 3.75" stroke) that did 610 on the engine dyno. It had GTP stage III 5.3 heads and 13:1 compression with a small solid roller cam.

i dont mean to hijack your thread but im trying to figure out if i can bore a 5.3 to a 4.00 bore and run ls1 rods (6.125) and still use stock 5.3 crank? or would the same thing happen with compression as the guy above me said? so essentially what im asking is if the 5.3 crank is the same as a 5.7? is it just the bore thats different on a 5.3.

i posted this in the gen 3 section but no one responded. any help would be awesome thanks.

All of the Gen III and IV cranks are the same stroke with 2 exceptions: The 4.8L and the LS7. The 5.3L, 5.7L, 6.0L, and 6.2L all share the same critical dimensions except for bore size. The 4.8L has a short stroke crank ~3.27" I believe and the LS7 has a 4.0" stroke.

To answer your other question though; no, you cannot take a 5.3 block out to a 4.0" bore. The largest I've seen is 3.910 and that was a pure race setup we did with the waterjackets 50% Hardblok... Ger a 6.0L block for your 4.0" bore.

Hope this helps...

So it would be cheaper to go to a 383 (3.905x4.0) than to a 359 (3.780x4.0), correct? Because of the piston availability on the 383?

Hm, starting to sound like a plan.

Got a ways to go until then, though. Right now I've just got Flowmaster 40s SI/DO and a Blackbear tune. I'm looking at headers for it now. Got my sights set on Pacesetter long tubes.

Dear All,
I just found out this forum, i have bein looking around for sometime now.

I have the 5.3 LY5, and instead of rebulding it, I plan to get an almost new 6.2 from a Denali and install it in my Sierra, if I do this , will the AWD and wiring harness/ PCM and TCM will make problems or it will swap easly and only programming is needed?

rebulding it in my country is soo expensive.

Thanks

Shane, you no longer neeed custom pistons... for the 5.3L bore

Wiseco released a new line of forged pistons for the 5.3L Bore about 3rd quarter 08 and they are a stocked on the shelf piston. About $600

Wiseco Forged Piston Set, Your Choice of 3.780" or 3.800" Bore Size, 4.000" Stroke, 6.125" Rod Length, 1.110" CH, -7cc Dished

K473XS 3.780 bore
K473X2 3.800 bore

Cool, this is great information. I figured someone would come along soon enough with a set of pistons! I still think the 3.905 bore is a better option for power but I'd love to see what a small bore long stroke motor like that could do.

As a note, Wiseco not only offers these pistons for the stock 3.622" stroke, but also for 4"! I was very happy to see that in the new catalog!

And I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't say something along the lines of "Of course, you can get these and any other Wiseco products at competitive prices here at Texas Speed & Performance!"

Thats good to know. If only they were avalible before I started my 5.3L rebuild... all well guess I will just have to build a back up when swap out the old for the new.

I spoke with another site sponser on here about some heads for a small bore set up like this... I see some serious potential esspecially with forced induction....
