Rings for stock LS2 piston
I'm looking for a set of good rings for my stock LS2 pistons. I ordered a set of Total Seal CRG2010-5 the diameter is correct but the top ring is too thick and does not fit in the pistons ring groove. Does anybody know if Total Seal or any other premium quality ring company makes ringsets (conventional, file to fit) for a stock LS2 piston?

I have some LS2 pistons as well and looked into this briefly. Apparently there are a few different ring sets depending on year, and production sequence number. Your best bet is to call Total Seal with your actual ring dimensions. Mine is 1.2mm / 1.5mm / 2.5mm and I intend to talk to TS on some rainy day to order up a bastard set.

No need for a bastard set. Total Seal CS 4712-5 is what we need 1.2 , 1.5, 2.5. The set I ordered is for an aftermarket piston for a 4.005 bore and cost 108.00 from Sumitt. Low and behold the set for a stock LS2 piston listed above is 250.00 (grab you ankles). RIDICULOUS it costs an extra 150.00 for essentially the same rings. Maybe I am overlooking something here.

Steel top works on a variety of engine applications (N/A to huge boost), I feel it as an unnecessary overkill with a hypereutectic LS2 piston though. Plasma moly works fine to a point, break-in is quicker and they are usually adequate for the typical 300-600hp N/A street engine.
Steel top covers all applications and take longer to break-in. They can take a lot of abuse, whereas plasma moly will flake off under conditions such as detonation for example. I have knocked the plasma coating off the top ring on my own cars a few times where a steel ring should have been used.

This was the reason I said **** it, and just put forged pistons/rods in my LS2 LOL. Went from a budget LS2/spray build to an AFR head, ported FAST 92, custom cam, diamond pistons, forged H-beam rod build...

Looks like i'm at yet another crossroads here. Called Total Seal they do not offer a moly top ring. It's not even about the money at this point i'd agree with Joseph as does my local engine builder the steel top ring is overkill on a hyper piston. I'd like a quick breakin I did have the cylinders deglazed with a ball hone. I am gonna look into 2 more options tomorrow and will report back. I have a feeling I am gonna end up with the steel top ring. I was told the factory rings are steel and that would explain the power most LS series motor seem to pickup after 5K+ miles are put on them.

That might explain why the OEM LS2 rings are high also, but the L92 rings are really cheap... If that is all there is available, I don't mind the price. I just assumed wrongly that TS would have something 1.2mm that was plasma-moly instead; and that would cover my needs. I have an LS2 rotating assembly that I was going to stuff into an LQ4 block and retrofit into some future project.

Joseph just a heads up I called a company Ackerly and Childs and they make a moly top ring to suite the stock LS2 piston. The part number is AC-2948 13.05 each.

With that said I spoke with the tech at Total Seal and I will be using a steel top ring afterall but figured why let this time in research go to waste LOL.

I realize this is a late post, but I kept stumbling across this while looking for a new set of rings for LS2 Pistons going in my LQ4. I found a set of rings from Hastings that are made for them. Haven't found them online except for one place so far, but it looks like $139 for the set.
Just thought I would share the info for the next sap looking for the same thing. Now I must decide whether to spend $139 for a set of rings or use that toward a whole forged setup....
Hastings Part# 2M5170
2005-08 364cu. in. Eng. LS2,LS7 6.0 Litre
Vin:H,K,U,Y 101.60mm 4.000 8
8 - 1.2mm
8 - 1.5mm
8 - 2.5mm

Thats about 1/2 the price of the Total seal ringset I used. The price looks attractive for sure but i'd investigate the difference in material and ring design. Not sure if a ring is a ring is a ring. Absolutley worth checking out thats a big difference in cost.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I had this same problem. The machine shop that did my block ordered me Mahle rings part # 4005ms-15 which are 1.5mm, 1.5mm, 3.0mm rings for LQ4/LQ9 6.0 rings. I decided to use the Hastings rings for my mostly stock rebuild.

$150 was easier to swallow than the $400+ for total seal rings.
Hopefully these will do fine for my mild engine.
