well this seems like as good a place as any to post up this curiosity question. I was curious realistically how much abuse do you guys think a 427 LS3 could take with spray? I mean could someone run it daily and then every one and a while hit with a 150 wet shot?

Gotcha , But i run a 300 shot on my 4.100" stroke, LS2 418 but in a duel stage. And drive it all the time on the street. But i have a lot of time in tunning. I was going to builld a LS3 433cid. 4.100 bore, But im thinking of a 427 with a LS3 block bored 4.080" . The LS3 stock bore is 4.065" and i know i can go to .035" over on max bore. But on nitrous im not for shore yet. But i well on the 427cid.

The LS3 short with a nice cathedral head will do very well. I just finished 2 417/418 builds one with PRC 237 heads made 675 flywheel hp & one with more compression & a aggressive camshaft made just right at 700flywheel hp using PRC 237 heads.

here's the dyno sheet with the new PRC spring kit at over 700 lift. You might consider this spring on whatever head you decide, for very little more money it uses a material & design that is vastly better than the previous LS valve springs on the market.

Thanks for the info Jason. I hope to be in that hp/tq range when I'm done. I'm still deciding so I'll take a look at the heads and springs. I'll probably be calling ya'll within the next month to order a shortblock.

What size injectors will I need with this build? The fueling department is definitely a gray area for me. Also I know I'll need a bigger fuel pump too, what do I need there?

Well I have finally started the build process. I called up Texas Speed yesterday and talked to them about getting everything set up. I decided on the 427 shortblock with all the goodies attached. So now I can look ahead to getting the rest of the parts together. Slowly but surely I'll get this thing together.

I hear you on that... I started the process on my 427 on Halloween of last year... and 6 1/2 months later I'm still not done. lol. BUT, if everything goes right, I might be starting her up for the first time this weekend.

Good luck!

What would be a good redline/shift point for the combination I'm putting together? I was thinking redline at 6800 and shift at 6600, I'm curious what others think on this. Doesn't the air the start to lop off around the upper 6 or lower 7 thousands?

I shift my 418 at 7200rpm and have been for three years now.

I'm planning on a 7,000 fuel cut off and 6,800 shift point based on input from my engine builder. My combo is very similar to yours - except I don't know your cam specs.

By the way, got mine started last Saturday! Hoping to take the first drive this Saturday, then dyno tune a week or so after that.

I guess I've got a while before I decide anything but sounds like I'll wind up spinning it a little higher than at first thought. I don't know my cam specs either right now, I'm going to let Patrick G spec one for me. Congrats on getting it up and running General Jack! Yeah I'm very curious as to what you'll put down. You'll have to keep me up to date on how everything goes.

Got the thing running this past weekend! No dyno or track numbers yet, but here's a clip with the idle. A little long, best footage is around 0:30 and 2:45 on.

Awesome I'll have to check it out when I get home since I can't access youtube at work. I had a small kink thrown in my plans this past weekend, my fuel pump went out. So I went ahead and ordered the racetronix pump and harness which I was going to need to upgrade sooner or later I guess the car made my choice for me though. Also I was looking at head gaskets and the closest one I've found for a 4.070 bore is a 4.100. Is this what people are using for this size bore or is there another?

This is the one I have, it will take up to 4.08" bore. GMPP # 12610046.

Well after weeks of anticipation I finally got a visit from the BIG brown truck. Thought I'd put up a few picks of the hunk of aluminum I got. I'm pretty excited even though I won't be using it for a few more months. Thanks to Texas Speed for a fine looking engine.

Well I've had some down time, but now I'm ready to start acumulating parts. Got a few questions on the oil pan. I know the ls1 pan will work but would it be better to get a stock ls3 pan or another pan? Any different in size or one better for oiling between the various oil pans?

I'm using the LS1 pan, haven't heard that there are any drawbacks to doing so. I know that on the LS1 pan, as opposed to the larger L92 pan, the lower volume spring on my Melling oil pump is recommended.

Thats one of the reasons I was asking about oil pans. I read somewhere that with the ls1 pan you didn't need a high volume oil pump. I'm guessing the volume of the oil pan must not be too significant since I haven't heard much discussion on them.
