Default Main bearing clearance LSX Block

I am putting my motor together and I checked my main bearing clearance and it is .0015 which I think is on the tight side for an iron block. I am not planning on spinning it above 7K and I am planning on running this oil in it http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/rd30.aspx but the engine makes about 1000 rwhp.

Yep, that's way too tight. What are you measuring with (plastigauge, caliper, dial bore gauge)?

That was with plastigauge...I borrowed a dial bore gauge from work and am measuring it tonight.

On aluminum blocks .0020 on the mains and .0025 for iron is what I have seen work well. For something with 1K hp a little loose would not hurt also.

I'd agree that up to about .0025" on the mains for an iron block would be good!

+1. Looser is safer. .0025"-.0027" would be as tight as I would go, IF everything is right. Good line hone and a 'high end' straight crankshaft!

.0015-.0017...I am getting some .001x bearings now. I could polish the crank but I want to try the .001x bearings first.

LOL, yeah don't try to polish out .001".

How much is a set of Clevite H series main bearings these days? $80-90? If you have a good crank grinder in your area, they will usually be able to grind .001" out pretty quickly for ~$60, and you also have nice round and straight journals. Not to mention, you can go ahead and check the ID of the rod bearings and have the rod journals ground for your desired clearance so that you don't have to go through this with them as well. IIRC, once you open the plastic wrap on those Clevites, you can't return them.

I am thinking you will need to try a Federal Mogul 152M1X to get your .0025" plus, I would bet that Clevite 1X will get you about .0022" if you are sitting at .0015"-.0017" now. The Federal Moguls are usually always looser than the equivalent size Clevites. I keep several sets of different sizes from both manufacturers on hand to get the fitment I want, but I 'm ****. At $100.00 a set that adds up quick

I have already run my mains at .0020 without any issues at all with this LSX block. So if they come out to be .0022 than I am happy with that.

Only reason I am messing with it now is because I cracked an ATI hub and once it cracked it wasn't running true on the front of my crank anymore and a surface crack developed and eventually broke my Callies crankshaft. I was very luckily to not tear anything else up in my motor...didn't even spin the #1 main bearing where the crank broke. We checked my line bore and it was within a tenth of what it was the last time I put it together and all the other bearings looked perfect.

If it is working for you keep with it. You did say you were using plastigauge. 1200 FWHP is no slouch. What did you see for differences between the plastigauge numbers and the dial bore gauge measurements?

I got right about .0015 with the plastigauge and .0016-.0017 measuring them.

I got the .001x bearings tonight and I am at .0022 on the mains so I am happy with that.
