Default Cylinder bore taper?

How much taper from top to bottom is acceptable after honing a newly bored aluminum block? .0005"? .001"? I have honed a few blocks myself and I can tell you it's hard to keep it down, especially on resleeved blocks with hard liners. At what measurement does taper start having side affects on the way an engine performs. Will hi tech honing machines keep it down?

my max is .0002-most stuff i can hold .0001-the darton sleeved blocks with the stepped sleeves are def harder, but after a little effort i figured out how to get them to .0002.

I really havent seen that big of performance loses in more out of round and tapered cylinders-had some that were out .003 and still made great power-the oil consumption seems to be the biggest problem.

Thanks for your reply and your expertise. That's what I'm working with now, a stepped sleeve. I ended up with the top 3/4" being on spec and by 1-1/2" down being .0005 tight and at the bottom being another .0005" tight. Is the step at the top holding the heat or not holding heat causing this? Can this be corrected without opening the top much more?

It's a friend's machine shop with an old Rottler honing machine. I believe he said the stone was a 300 grit. Measuring was done with a Sunnen dial bore guage (.0001 increments).

Default Honing Darton sleeve material

That older Rottler hone most likely uses Sunnen manual honing stones. My guess is you are using the wrong grade of stone or there is something wrong with your stones, guide shoes or technique i.e. you may be rushing things and getting the block too warm during honing.

I am going to attach Sunnen honing stone data for Darton ductile iron for their machines. You can cross reference the stone grade to see if you have the correct stones.

i agree with Steve, probably too much heat. The Darton sleeves are so much harder than std sleeves they cut very slow.I use a diamond hone,so i can't speak directly about vitrified stones-but it's very easy to have too much pressure due to the slow cut-lots of pressure makes alot of heat.I rough them it to about .001 and work them in from there using extremly low pressure and lots of coolant. It usually take me 2-3 days to hone one of these block-lots of cool down periods.

You are correct on it uses the Sunnen stones. I'll have to check tomorrow on which ones were used.
