Default Build me a "reasonable" 600hp paper Tiger?

First i will say i know basically nothing about LS series engines. I will be starting work on a early second gen pro touring camaro this winter and need to start planing out my drivetrain now. I am wanting to build something as close to 600hp at the flywheel as possible without getting exotic (read un-needed expense). I want to stay with an aluminium block to save the weight. Other than that i am open to about anything. I will probably go carbed instead of injected.
One question is will ported L92 heads support this much horsepower?
Thanks in advance guys.

You're not going to get a 'reasonable' 600rwhp motor unless you want to spray it or boost it. N/A is gonna cost some $ just a heads up.

Well 600rwhp would be a nice bonus but i will settle for the intended 600 @ flywheel above !

408-427ci with middle of the road heads and a single plane intake with a 1000 cfm 4150 holley will surpass 600.

This guy apparently ended up with a very nice 577/530 at the wheels with a very mild build using L92 heads.

402, ls2 based, tfs 215-235 heads or equivalent, 102 lsxr intake and a proper cam wil get you 600+ all day

Man i just read that entire thread! Quite the build and quite the results. What do you think could be accomplished with that basic build but carbed? I dont know if i want to get to involved with having to sleeve a block but its definately an option.

That's over 3 years of reading. LOL

The composite manifold is the limiting factor. People have gotten very good results running a carb manifold and carb TB. If you have to run an elbow though, you're better off with the composite manifold.

Can be done easy with a LS2-LS3 block or build a stroker out of one of these.. **** I am 25hp shy of 600 to the flywheel and I still have a stock bottom end LS1 and all motor.. In the process of building a LS2 based 402ci at the moment. I will be looking at 700-750 to the flywheel with this new motor.. If money isn't and option do like I did and contact someone that knows allot about the buisness like Allan Futral, Shane at Thunder Racing, Ed Curtis, etc.

Thats a pretty stout setup your currently using, and very impressive plan for the next one. Care to PM me with the specs? I plan on building a 370 soon, and would like some info from people who have actually been there and done it.

Sure man I can send you some info on my setup. My current setup was good for 10.90@123mph with a 1.46 60ft in a car that weighed 3620lbs with me in it. As far as the new engine goes I'm not gonna let the cat out of the bag until I get some solid track #'s..

Thanks! I want an engine with good street manners, that can take to the track 4-5 times a year. Was told 500+ isn't gonna happen without 13:1 compression. Was also told that a stock LQ9 with L92's and a Z06 Cam will be VERY close to 500hp (crank). Was looking for a real answer.

Aluminum HKE 402-408, spec'd cam, AFR230cc heads, 1-7/8 american racing headers, bolt-ons.

Total cost might be around $12-13000 though.

cubic inches. LSX block. 4.25 stroke. 4.25 bore. sneaky port L92 heads.

.600 lift 220 + duration cam.

50,000 miles worth of reasonable.

It will be going in a 70 Camaro so there will be no elbow to restrict it.....

A set of ported L92 heads with 400+ cubic inches should be capable of supporting 600 flywheel horsepower with a well thought out build. The flow numbers on these heads are truly amazing considering the cost. Too bad quality parts for the rest of the motor are so damn expensive.

For a 70 Camaro, you need to also consider the "other" costs of going to an LS series. Things like accessory drives will blow you away when comparing to old SBC or BBC parts.

Do the math before you take the plunge. You might find that you can assemble and install a BBC for a lot less cash - recognizing you will have a heavier package. If money is not an object, you can get these in aluminum too. Many crate 540's around 10K that would be hard for an LS to match NA and they will drop in with factory parts.

This is actually my build. It turned out so well that Shawn has made is a package offered by Virginia Speed.

Order one up, bolt it in and have a blast for a long time.
