Default iron 454 question

while gettin some money around for my ls1 build my dad told me about a 454 that came out of a (i think 2006) chevy truck at the dealer ship he works at.

they were going to scrap it because it has a "slight tick"

now my question is, and ive searched the forum for the past hour, are these the iron blocks that some guys are building with?

are they worth it to build and swap?

with aftermarket heads do fast intakes fit on them instead of the funky intake it has on it?

keep in mind id be getting the complete engine for free, and its complete from pan to intake.

thanks

It's probably an lsx block, which are no different than any other ls blocks. Aftermarket heads and intakes will fit it fine, what it has now is probably a truck intake which is why it looks funky. A car intake is different that it's shorter.

Are you sure its not a 7.4 Big Block engine. Chevy didnt put 454 LSX motor in trucks or cars for that matter.

i thought the Chevy trucks could be special ordered with an 8.1L motor....I have no idea if anyone has ever built one up though or if there are any parts to be bought as aftermarket for that motor either...

Ive heard of a couple people with a 454 build in T/A's but other than that I don't have much knowledge. I think itd be a pretty sweet ride when done.

i asked my dad after i checked it out, because the back of the engine was against the wall to close for my to see the stamping number of the liter on it.

so i asked him are you sure its a 454 and not a 6.0 or something along the lines of that

and he replied yes hes 100% its a 454

i will take a picture of it tomorrow and maybe see if i can get to the back of the block

its def fuel injected and has all the coil packs just like an ls1 for example

it looks just like a BIG ls1 besides the intake it came out of a later 2000's truck like i said i think maybe a 2006

Those engines are popular in marine applications and do have some aftermarket support, but not much. I think they have cathedral port heads and a crank trigger ignition just like an LS1.

Yea that sounds like it could be the 8.1 L vortec engine available in trucks and vans.496ci.Not a BBC and not a LS motor. You should be able to find some info on here if you search-there have been threads about them on here. There is some aftermarket stuff for them because they are used in hi performance boats.Google Raylar engines.Don't think building one will be cheap though.

Easy way to tell if it's a lsx block is it will be painted chevy orange and say LSX right on the front. But I'm with everyone else probably that 8.1l engine. How your dad knows it's a 454 by just looking at it is besides me unless it says it right on the block or valve covers.

If its a 496 check out offshore only and other boat websites. They use those motors in alot of newer boats and can make good power with them. You just cant spin them very high.

If it came out of a 2006 truck and was the orginal engine, it cant be a lsx. The lsx didnt come out till 2007 at best. Also I have never heard of a lsx block installed at the factory

He just said they took it out of a 2006 not that it was the OE engine. My 2006 TBSS has a LSX454 in it

haha i dont want anyone to get heated.

to clear up like i stated in the first i said i THINK a 2006 could have been later they look the same,

like i said i can get pics tomorrow and investigate further

as to "delphigto" thanks for the info but if it ends up being a 496 im not going to bother with it

the strange thing to me is im thinking now it might be a 496 now that ive read a bunch about the 496.......but why would they denote it as a 454?

like i said all will be cleared up tommorow

Could be the GM Performance Parts 454LSX crate motor.

Did it look like this?

If the hotlink didn't work, here's the regular link.
