Default LY6 Inconel exhaust valves

Im assembling a bare set of LSA heads for my 370 FI build. I have a set of LS3 hollow stem intakes and for the exhaust I have a set of valves I pulled from a 08' LY6 6.0 engine that was in a boat. I have heard over and over again that the LY6 exhaust exhaust valves were made of inconel but I see surface rust on the lower part and I was under the impression that inconel was rust resistant. As a matter a fact I put them side by side to the LS3 exhaust valves and they are identical in every way, both are non magnet with a welded tip, both weigh approx 90 grams, and both will rust.

So this said my question is how am I supposed to tell for sure if these are inconel or just a regular old valve? There is at least a part number on the intake valves but no such thing on the exhausts. Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Those exh are not Inconel. I change them out to ferera exhaust valves and run the stock ls3 intakes no problems

Inconel = $$$. I retired from the oil industry a few years ago. When specc'ed, a 2" Inconel globe valve was over $10k vs around $500 for a carbon steel valve. I would assume this cost ratio could be directly applied to an automotive valve. In other words, I do not believe GM would intentionally spend unnecessary money on valve material...

The weight is how you will tell. The stock LS3 exhausts are 90g, I just weighed one last night. The Inconel will be heavier by a lot.

I know I don't believe they are inconel either. So what's all this crap everywhere saying that they are? Seems like a lot of unnecessary money for gm to spend.

And why are the exhaust valves non magnetic while the intakes are if they are both just steel?

We did some tensile strength testing on a bunch of valves a while back and the GM valves tested 50% higher than the Ferrea valves, so they seem to be good. Stainless valves are non magnetic, at least higher quality ones are.

So is there actually any difference between the ls3 and ly6 exhaust valves?
