another piece to the puzzle....I think they will look pretty good on either side of the kinsler...

Also I am hoping to hear back from Mr. Tooley after the holidays so I can start getting some progress going towards getting my heads built...

Well I got the L92 all torn down and sent it off with my buddy...now we are going to talk to ERL and finalize the plans for the short block build...then we should get things rolling...

so here are some pictures....I think this combo is going to look sick under the hood...

On to the tear down.

The cam phaser bolt gave me more trouble than anything....

All torn down and ready to go to ERL

Big question as of right now....Do I go solid roller or hydraulic roller...I am going to get the bushings installed by ERL for either solid or hydraulic lifters....

What ya got? Pros and Cons of both??

I have decided to go hydraulic but I have yet to hear back from Mr. Tooley....I just emailed him again...

As for my head choice a while back Mr. Tooley told me that the Mast 285's would be a good option...At first I was wondering why the 305's weren't a better option, but then I got to looking at the flow numbers and the 285's actually flow better than the 305's at every data point except for .5" of lift and there is only a 6cfm difference...

So I am thinking that the 285's are going to be my best bet for a starting point...

Here is what I have established as far as the top end build goes:

Mast 285 LS7 heads
LS7 1.8:1 rockers with comp trunnion upgrade
BTR spring kit
Lightweight valves (options?)
Some sort of link bar lifters (options?)
Thick walled pushrods (options?)
Head gasket (options?)
Custom spec'd cam

There is more to the story than just flow #.

If you want to make big power you need the 305.

This is what is holding my car back.

For a cam you should contact Martin at Tick. He is really good at specing LS cams.

We've made 930 hp with the 285 heads, solid roller.

I thought you had LS3 heads Tim?

Even the smallish TFS 245's have run really low 9's N/A with a hydraulic roller. It doesn't take the biggest heads available to run fast.

I just want to have the best optimal set of heads for my set up and make the most power possible N/A. I realize there is more to the story then flow numbers...but it is hard to disagree with Mr. Tooley...

Tim, what makes you think the 285's are holding you back?

Yes, according to Mast flow #'s the 285 flows a bit more at each lift# but I went ahead and ordered a set of 305's thinking that there isn't that much difference.

SSStang...what are the specs of you setup, if you don't mind sharing. Any particular reason you went with the 305's?

I'm also building a N/A ERL 454 but don't feel like taking the time to do a build thread. The engine will have a custom cam but haven't nailed down which intake I'll be using. So far I have it narrowed down to a GMPP LS7, Mast 4500, or Holley Hi-Ram.

Ok I got ya... When you ordered you heads what made you decide on the 305's....any input you have would be very helpful...

I really like the Hi-Ram personally

On the different options for intake, let say the carb type intake(GMPP LS7, Mast 4500), air intake charge will on be from a cowl hood opening? While the Holley Hi ram will still utilized a front filter(stock type housing) such as air lids in camaros and firebirds. I guess my question is, which will be more efficient?

I don't really see what you are trying to ask...It depends on the engine set up as to which intake will be best

As for the intake, I have a cowl hood but it's only a 2" but it's factory and I want to keep it for sentimental reasons. Yes, I may have to cut it (Hi-Ram or Mast) but I think I can make it work. Have considered cutting and utilizing the sheetmetal cowl area to get more air in. If I use the Hi-Ram I can fabricate a sheetmetal plenum attached to front air dam. Alot of my friends are sheetmetal workers. Still undecided on intake...
