Default New LSX 454 build

Ok the engine build is now in progress…so just wanted to share in the experience….
Here’s the platform 67 Camaro fully mod’d for Pro Touring


Goals:
Fun/competitive car on the track and occasionally a trip to work or a “grocery run”.
This has been garage build with monetary limits therefore its taken 13 years to get where I am today.
Engine details
LSX block
454 displacement




T56 magnum 6speed
Forged Callies with Weisco pistons on the bottom end
Cam undecided but will pull the lever soon…..Here’s the range I’m looking at, Hyd roller with an aggressive bite and a redline ~7000rpm
242/254 .639”/.639” 112 LSA +3
250/264 640” / .640” 111 LSA +3
Waiting for some feedback from Bullet Cams and will pick from there….
LS7 rockers modified by CHE
Manley springs
Limited travel lifters
WCCH Heads Brodix BR7 275cc/99cc heads
Mast 4500 intake
4500 Acufab TB
Holley HP efi
Dailey Engineering 3 stage dry sump
Things I need to buy yet:
Headers
Coils (any suggestions on coils I’d appreciate it) I’m looking to relocate them so its not such an eye sore but I don’t need to figure that until I install it.

Looking to make FWHP north of 700HP
Waiting on the pistons and dry sump to come in but we’re looking to assemble by the end of April. I’m using RWR racing in Phx, after interviewing many shops in the area I quickly realized I was in the right spot with Rick and his team to finish my project. We’ll also run the engine immediately after build to tune and verify I got what I paid for.

Also talked with Ricky Best from Holley who works regularly with RWR and he's got the EFI stuff all laid out for me and will help in getting this set up while i'm in the test cell.

Finally down the path in making some noise.....its been a long road...

Looks like this is going to be a badass build...I am doing the same sort of thing but with a 70 chevelle...and my engine build is a little different...still a 454, but its a sleeved ls3 from erl, and i'm topping it off with a set of frankenstein heads and a kinsler intake...I will definitely keep up with your build!

i've also been watching yours....do you know when you'll have numbers? ITB's would be nice but i had to "simplify" it at some point or i'd never finish....can't wait to see some numbers.

Go with a cam that has ~15 degree split and as high a lift as your springs will take! For headers go with 1-7/8" stepped with 3-1/2" diameter merge collectors with minimum 3-1/2" dia head pipes into an X and you will FAR exceed your requirements

ok, got everything i need to finish the build except for coils and wires.....anyone have any suggestions. Understand the internet is full of opinions just looking for some solid performers....still hoping to make some noise soon....

Very nice looking car and even better list of parts. Looking forward to seeing how this all turns out for you. I think you're going to exceed you HP goal.

D585 heat sink coils, usually can be found in classified and Firecore 50 wires are supposed to be the best.

Default Cam Sensor question

ok...life happens and what i expected for a complete build and test finalized has been pushed out a bit. Should've known with this project multiply $ and Time by a factor of 3 or 4.

Took longer than what i expected with the Dailey dry sump but its a piece of art work and we finalized on a CAM with a lot of input from multiple suppliers:
Bullet
246/258
639" lift
113 C/L

Question for the guys familar to the LSX block, i've been told i need to run the LS2 cam sensor up front on the timing cover, everyone concur? apprently it can't accommodate the sensor in the back.....whats the part number so i can search...
right now i have Front Timing Cover GM P/N 12561243....am i going down the right path?

right now i'll be thrilled if it can test this by early Sept...

its kinda a race between Brian's build and mine to see who gets the numbers first....

That's correct, the LSX blocks are basically a "Gen IV" block. There is no provision for the rear cam sensor or knock sensors in the lifter valley.

Not sure what the PN is for the front cover is, though.

No...the 12561243 is an ls1/6 timing cover. You need a 12633906 and the correct timing gear.

Tony,
The correct timing gear set will be determined by the reluctor wheel you use. A 24T reluctor requires a 2 lobe upper timing gear, a 58T reluctor requires a 4 lobe upper timing gear. Also, there may be a difference in the cam position sensor so specify early (LS2/24T) or late (LS3/58T) front timing cover when you order it.

thanks Shril,

you're spot on of course....i relied on the local Chevy dealer and now i have an extra timing cover for an LS1....

Getting everything lined up for test cell run has been challenging although i think i'm finally there with the new cover coming from Tick hopefully this week.

well i think its finally going to happen and maybe i'll make some real HP soon....
Way too many things go in the way but we're built up to the intake. Need to do a little machining to get everything squared up on the intake but we're shooting for tue or wed for the test cell.

Looks like a killer build... Do you know that the LS7 rockers have a 1.8 ratio instead of the standard 1.7 ratio? Some people don't realize this and it causes confusion/problems; just a heads-up.

yep, although thanks for the heads up. we ordered pushrods yesterday should have by tomorrow.

Thanks for the encouraging words....a lot of things have to come in line to make the wednesday deadline..

just got them in but we're sending them back. there was some variations in length so waiting for the next batch. not sure how there can be that much variation??
hopefully we'll get them on Monday so we can;
