L99 vvt cam swap or ls3 conversion
Hey guys I have 2011 L99 complete engine and 6l80e im swapping in my 88 monte carlo ss. I already have the motor and trans already mounted in car. before I proceed and put the rest of front accessories on I was debating on doing the LS3 CONVERSION.
Im stuck between just deleting the dod, changing the lifters and adding a bigger vvt3 cam vs just doing the entire ls3 conversion and swapping bigger cam.
I know some guys have already did the conversion. What are the pros and cons of just sticking with vvt? I hear some say vvt is the future and makes good power. im just stuck trying to decide which way to go. I already have longtube headman headers, complete exhaust with xpipe. I want to have 550 rwhp.
please chime in.

I have and LY6/6l90with vvt, but without AFM. It is similar to the L99/6l80, but iron block instead of aluminum, and 6.0 instead of 6.2.
As everyday street driving goes, a good tune makes this combo very potent. Try to find someone who has experience with the 6 speed transmission.
If you are considering a cam swap, just go with a recommendation from your tuner. I really wanted to keep the VVT, but haven't seen any real evidence that they are worthwhile. When I decide to step up the cam, I am going to drop the vvt.
You won't be dissapointed either way. Should be a fun car.

Yea my tuner said do away with afm and vvt and get the delete kit and get a nice cam and all the other lil goodies. My main goal is 550hp with the ls3 conversion, cam, headers, full exhaust , and tune. Is that possible? Which cams wake these motors up? I want a nice choppy idle with lots of power.

I've tuned a couple of VVT engines and really like the torque curve that the VVT provides. If you want to go big get the TSP VVT3 cam and delete the AFM. I would personally keep the VVT. Make sure your tuner can dial in the virtual ve tables and not just a MAF only tune because it makes a world of difference.

I normally recommend leaving the VVT in place if you can get a good harness and all for the swap that will allow you to do so. We made more power with VVT than we did without all the way across when we did our dyno testing with the standard non vvt cams and our VVTcams. We have dyno graphs of most of our non VVT and our VVT cams for the L99 and LS3 on our web site which i could link to you if you wanted to send us a PM or give us a call.
Thanks

So I decided to go with TSP Vvt3 and just delete the afm. I also got a 3200 stall converter. So hopefully with the vvt3 cam kit , headers, full exhaust with xpipe and tune I can wake this motor up.

Looking forward to seeing it. I kept the stock VVT set-up on my truck for a couple of years, and loved the mid-range pull it had.

My L99 VVT cam makes 525rwhp so I'd keep the VVT, With that can and converter you picked out you'll be around 460-475rwhp.
I've already helped 3 of my buddies push north of 500rwhp and track times on 3800-4000lb cars back it up also. You need a VVT cam from the guy that knows it better then anyone Rhino79.
He's car runs 10.30s and still 3750lbs

It is worth ditching the solid L99 intake valves for the LS3 hollow stem intake valves. IMO.
